I haven't seen all of season 2 yet, and so haven't really got much of a handle on him. Ronon would understand killing; he's been military, as you said, and that whole Running thing. And yeah, Teyla is the leader... basically, what you said.
Of course, you'll note that Faith hasn't filled in Sheppard. While we know he would understand, Faith doesn't think so. She's not at that point of trusting him yet. She's more able to see kindred spirits in Teyla (the woman fighter) and Ronon (the fighter) than in John (who's more the authority figure. She doesn't know him yet.)
