What Nathaniel meant was that Anita should know better than to think she can love him. I addressed that in the last bit of chapter 64. She "should" be smart enough to realize that he puts her in dangerous situations and/or can't protect himself.
Jean-Claude would probably try and protect her, or at least arrange situations to his liking to have Anita happy, without her knowing. She'd be really pissed if she thought he was trying to fix her life without her knowing.
