I think Anita does the necessary thing both because she thinks no one else will do it and because she thinks that they shouldn't do it. It's not something that she wants to do, but she feels she's has to. She's taken on doing the necessary thing as a personal responsibility.

And it is knotty, but I think that's because Anita is kind of knotty/complex character.
