re near-deer - my fave Atlantis food was Turkelope, which cracks me up to this day (the context was "Well, they had a sign on this stuff calling it turkelope à l'orange, so I'm thinking there just might be citrus in it."
"Oh, right. Nice of them to welcome me back with zoologically improbable death.")
the political aspects of being a gay Marine in Atlantis, I've been wanting to deal with for a while in fic. There are so many stories where everyone's fine with half of Atlantis being gayer than Paris in the 20s, but every week on the news I see stories of American soldiers being discharged for being outed, and with the current political situation I wanted to touch upon those issues. Also the disparity between how the US handles homosexuality in the military, compared with Canada (where the military has a recruitment booth during Pride Week and in 2005 an airbase in Nova Scotia hosted its first gay wedding (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2005/06/14/militarygaywedding0614.html)) and the UK.
This may be me going on a tangent, but that's me. I'm going to try to deal with the issue as best I can, non-soapbox style, and in a realistic way. Well, as realistic as it's possible to be talking about an alien base in another galaxy.
