The Zoological death is from a lurvly SGA/Dr. Who crossover with Donna (series 4) - you don't need to know Dr. Who for it, as it's just a great look at Rodney. Displacement (The Longest Three-Week Day) (http://michelel72.livejournal.com/49511.html).
Frankly, what I see in SGA is a John Sheppard who's had a great deal of emotional damage over the years (I think you've read my story about John finding his dead mother when he was 5) and has a hard time in dealing with people. When he does find people to let into his emotional circle, he can get overly attached to them (see his actions in the series when his team are in danger). I don't think it matters if the character is canon straight or bisexual, because he has such a hard time dealing with attachment.
All of which makes a more interesting character than happy!gay!John, who I just don't see on screen. The happy part, that is.
I read a bit of artaxstra's stuff (I dig the gritty John/Teyla stuff) but I'll go back and look at it all.
