To Grandmother's House We Go
An Anita Blake drabble

Disclaimer: LKH owns all things Anita Blake
Characters: little Anita, her father
Setting: Pre-series. Waaay pre-series. In that summer after Anita started to raise the dead.

[livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 Challenge: #63 -- Summer
Note: [livejournal.com profile] sabriel_0405 said a lovely thing the other hour, and it pushed me into drabbling.

~~~
He stared at his thirteen-year-old daughter, sitting sullenly in the airport. She didn't want to be here, didn't want to go to Mexico while all her friends were at summer camp. He didn't want to be here either.
Anita looked so normal that his stomach churned. But she wasn't normal. Like stories Maria had told about her mother, stories of unnatural darkness.
"Can I get a Coke?" Anita asked suddenly.
He swallowed his panic. "Sure, sweetie."
"Thanks, Daddy."
He watched Anita, so young, so... innocent. Who would have imagined that she could do something as horrible as raising the dead?
~~~

Plus, I stayed late at work today, and made a banner for "Hey Little Sister". It's kinda goofy, but what can you do with B&W images?

It looks like this:

And it's on the story now. Whee!

Really shows the moment, Anita's dad stopped really seeing her as his little girl and started seeing her as something 'other'.

She didn't see it at the time, but it gradually came to her... which is arguably worse, finally understanding that your own father thinks that about you. Poor kid.

That's.... actually kind of creepy. Woo! :) What a nice horrible moment there. Wow.

And *g* it is freaky the resemblance there!

Creepy is as creepy does. I enjoyed this one, the "getting back to basics" of it all.

They are so pretty, so B&W, and they sort of do look related. If Torri appears on SPN then I can die happy (well, why not? filmed in Vancouver and all that).

Huh. What happened to the entry with Buffy/SGA drabbles? I've had it open and I read them and was about to praise them now that I finally had time to read them, and when I tried to refresh to be able to comment, it only gave me error message and I couldn't find it when I scrolled down your last posts... or I might be blind and it's somewhere really obvious...
Well, the drabbles were fabulous anyway, I hope there will be more :)

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're not wacky. I removed those drabbles for a myriad of reasons. They will be up again when I get the set completed. Thanks, though, for your kind words :)

Aww, poor Anita. No idea her father thinks what he does...not yet, anyway.

Makes you wonder how different things would have been if Anita's mother hadn't died. *If* thing would have been different... after all, her mother's mother was the vaudaun priestess. Maybe she'd have been even more freaked out.

The banner looks great! Will we be seeing more from the "Hey Little Sister" 'verse? 'Cause that would be The Awesome.

I totally understand why Anita doesnt talk to her family is this is what her dad thinks of her.

[identity profile] practical-puss.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know, I've always wondered about her father. Canon points to him kind of sucking. I like anything that has him in it.
On another note, pretty picture! But yeah, there's only so much you can do with black and white.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he's certainly not presented in the best light... at all. Anita doesn't seem to have much time for him in the books. I wonder if we'll ever see him in the books...

And yes, so pretty are these people. It was a slap-dash image after work to let off a bit of steam :)

[identity profile] practical-puss.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
But I am curious. What did sabriel_0405 say to prompt this?

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Guh. See, she said this on a drabble she wrote for abvh100:

Author's note: Though this is far from my best drabble, I want to dedicate it to mhalachaiswords. In my opinion, Mhal set the standard to which the rest of us drabblers aspire. What she can do in 100 words a lot of published authors can’t do in a 1000. In a few words she conveys emotions, senses, and other tangibles. The fandoms she is moving into have no idea the treat they are in for. Thanks Mhal, for being a great moderator and an inspiring writer.

and so that made me think "I totally have to drabble to make myself worthy of such praise!"

And then the drabble came out.

And then I'm all like "hrm family issues."

My mind jumps all over the place, like a 3-year-old hyped up on espresso. With a puppy.

Yeah, we all know. But it's an awesome 3-year-old with, like, the best espresso made in a french press.
And the puppy a big-assed wolfhound puppy.
Or possibly one of those little wiener dogs, however you roll.

Puppies!

If I had a puppy, I'd cuddle and pet it and name it George. And I'd drink coffee the whole. damn. time.
