Find a fic, movies, NSS, Gold leader standing by, hi

1. A lovely reader over at the Ginourmous list of Anita Blake/Harry Potter fanfic listing is looking for a fic:

After the war, Harry takes up his inheritance and is informed that he has still (a) relative(s) left. He travels to St. Louis and has a house next to Anita's. Only 2 or 3 chapters, up in the Pit of Voles. Anyone have any clues?

2. How many people here have seen A Christmas Story?
[Poll #1312614]
I have to admit, I resisted seeing until 2005. Then I was stormed in at my parents' house one Christmas day and watched it and OH MY GOD I LOVED IT. It's now my go-to Christmas movie every year. What are your go-to holiday films?

3. I had one of those NSS moments yesterday - So I'm planning this book, see, but the main character is a man and most of what I'm good at writing (around here) are strong female leads (in no particular order: Anita Blake times one million, Ziva David, Dawn Summers, Rory Gilmore). It occurred to me that one of the reasons I'm having trouble moving forward is the gender of my lead character because frankly boys are confusing. I'm trying to re-work the book with a female lead. Will advise.

4. If you're into mash-ups, I totally recommend heading over to DJ Party Ben's site. His Galvanize the Empire (Chemical Brothers vs. John Williams) rocks my socks.

5. Mostly, I'm just writing to say hi :)

The major go-to Christmas movie around here is White Christmas. BEST EVER.

Besides that, I've a small soft spot for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, and the Santa Clause. And you can't forget A Charlie Brown Christmas and the Grinch (animated, not that piece of hooey they made a few years back. :D Boris Karloff Pwns Jim Carrey any day!)

White Christmas all the way!

Christmas is the best for movies. I'm a sucker for family and hope :D

White Christmas with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney. Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

I've tried to watch A Christmas Story a couple of times. I just can't get past how stupid it looks. I'm sure it's funny, and I've caught the plot line a dozen times over from various other sources. I just... Can't convince myself to watch it.

Edit: Apparently I fail at HTML tonight. And, yes, that clip you've linked above is one of the reasons I adore White Christmas.

I resisted A Christmas Story for the same reasons. What I love about it is that it's a story about being a kid. It feels wholesome. And ridiculous. And pompous in a lovely way. (and the Mom character is awesome).

HTML is overrated.

White Christmas is the one XMas movie I grew up with. I think I can sing all the sings from memory.

Hi!

I haven't seen A Christmas Story yet, but I will look for it.

Love White Christmas (love Danny Kaye really), A Charlie Brown Christmas, and A Miracle On 45th Street (only in black and white though)

I'm currently hooked on Nickelback's new album, especially the song "S.E.X."

EDIT: Just finished listening to "Galvanize the Empire", that was the most brilliant mash up I've ever heard. Thanks!

White Christmas is made of awesome. Miracle on 34th Street is also great - young Natalie Wood really sold being a cynical young girl who slowly accepts the idea of Christmas as a season of giving. That movie always rivets me to the screen.

Will have to check out that album :)

::facepalm::

Thank you for knowing what movie I meant!

There's only one movie with a street name like that :) And it's made of awesome.

[identity profile] lurkslikefox.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, one movie and its remake.

More like a movie concept

I read the book that the movie A Christmas Story is based on many years before the movie came out, loved it, and I have to say, the movie was crafted with as much love and respect for the original story as the Lord of the Rings trilogy was by Peter Jackson. Of course the fact that the guy who wrote the book also wrote the script, narrated the film, and had a cameo as the guy who sends the kids all the way to the back of the line when they go to see Santa probably had something to do with it. He was very hands-on, is what I'm sayin'. The book is called In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepherd and it's a hysterically funny piece of Americana. Each chapter is a story that could stand alone as a short story, but they are all linked to form a cohesive novel.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have somehow acquired one of the short stories in that book -- I will see if I can find it at the library. The humour is totally awesome. Mostly becuase growing up is so hard.

Your Christmas Kitty cracks me up

When I lived with my mother, watching It's a Wonderful Life was required, which is why I've started my own traditions. My top must-see movies each year:
A Christmas Story
Love Actually
Christmas Vacation
The Nutcracker

This year, I watched Christmas With the Kranks, which was pretty funny. I am somewhat done with the uber-religious movies, so I'd rather watch the animated classics of my childhood.

There is one movie that I particularly like, but haven't seen in a while: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The kids give the baby Jesus a ham, because myrrh doesn't sound like a good gift, you know?

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've seen the movie, but I've certainly read the book. I love that story.

[identity profile] eliara.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Love Actually is the most adorable movie ever! I can't even imagine not watching that around Christmas. :)

[identity profile] lurkslikefox.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, its all about A Muppet Christmas Carol. I cry every time he sings that song with Belle about how love is gone... Literally every time.

My young life was built around certain principles from A Christmas Story. Because of it, I always have to watch the marathon replay of it on TNT.

[identity profile] dotty8608.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded on the marathon watching! I have to watch it at least two or three times on Christmas Eve, whether it's all the way through or not.

[identity profile] shaneey.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
A Christmas Story is basically a staple of my family's holiday season. We have the marathon playing all 24 hours (literally). I can't remember a Christmas without it. I originally thought it was called "A 24 hour Christmas Story" (which made no sense to me at the time because the plot lasted more than one day...but o well) until years later when I was finally corrected XD

The Ref and A Muppet Christmas Carol :D
I mean, yes I love White Christmas and Vacation but the two above are the best!

[identity profile] sparrowsverse.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
A Muppet Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life and the old Claymation Christmas stories. Those are the ones I watch every year without fail. Of course, I'm not oppose to movies that have Christmas in them, but are only there as a backdrop, like say the first two Die Hard films and Love, Actually. :D

As for the Anita Blake fic, the only one I keep coming back to is a story by kirallie, but Harry moves in with Richard because they're cousins. So I doubt that's it.

[identity profile] dragon-mouse.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have have HAVE to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon, I refuse to watch the remake with Jim Carrey) at least once a season, if not more. Or else its just not Christmas.

[identity profile] denitta.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Die Hard
Home Alone 1 & 2
White Christmas

New addition: This Christmas

The cartoon Grinch is good too.

[identity profile] slob-child.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, thanks for the mashup rec. I am really digging Pheugoo right now; Clock a Minute is pretty awesome. I like a lot of DJ Schmolli's stuff, too - Smell My Bleeding Love has Nirvana's beat backing Leona Lewis' vocals and it totally works for me.

I love watching Die Hard for Christmas ^_^ My family tends to gift each other DVDs, so a lot of Christmas days are spent watching new things, which means we don't have much of a tradition.

[identity profile] khyrra.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
A Christmas Story is probably my go-to Christmas movie. It doesn't hurt that I'm from Cleveland(where the film was shot). Downtown doesn't really look like that anymore, but it mostly did when I was a kid. Plus one of the old ladies in my book club used to live in that house!

"Show me how a piggy eats..." - my favorite part. It never fails to make me laugh. That and the Chinese restaurant waiters singing Christmas carols. Not exactly PC, but hey.

Another hilarious Christmas movie that never gets any play is Mixed Nuts. If you haven't seen it, check it out.
