FreeRice

This is pretty cool -- an on-line vocab game that will donate 10 grains of rice to the UN World Food Programme for every question you get right.

BBC story on the game

I got to 350 grains of rice and the questions got too hard for me. And I call myself a writer :P

Anyway, something to pass the time that will do something good for someone else.

I'm going to repost later at my journal. I just hit 2000 grains :)

2100 grains before hitting a word that I did not recognize. Sacred cats1 (As my daughter would say.)

Nrgh. Made it up to 48-level before losing a few; fluctuated between there and 44, but got it up over 2,000 grains of rice before losing patience.

I wish they'd use the words in sentences. I learned most of my advanced vocabulary from borrowing my parents' books as a kid; I can conjure an image of what they mean when presented in context, but as for knowing the definition of one standing on its own, and extrapolating from there to an appropriate synonym? *cudgels brain*

Good link, thanks.

I got up to about 1180 at level 46 before I started loosing. Then just got bored. Think it'll be one of those games where I play once a day.

That's very cool. *goes to play*

Ooo, shiny! ::plays::

This is fun to poke around, even if I've only gotten up to level 38 :P

I love that game. Even if I do feel like a fraud when I guess correctly :P.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, at least you're not Googling the words :P

Le cool. I floated around 31-34 for 700 or so grains. ^-^

[identity profile] windmiran.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
cool. I'll echo jedibuttercup, though - i learned all my words from books! Unfortunately, that means I can't pronounce them in person, but I can make an educated guess at synonyms by thinking of phrases I've read... I stopped at 1000 and lvl 49. There has to an end somewhere!

Thanks for the link (will repost later on my journal).

Learned a lot, used a few buckets of luck and was useful.
What more could a girl want on a boring weekend :?

[identity profile] rosy-the-cat.livejournal.com 2007-11-12 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna try to donate 1000 grains a day. Or at least some. Meh, it all depends on how much I have to do in a day...

I got 3000 before I got tired. I'll do some more tomorrow, If I have the patience I know I can get higher.

What about you Mhal? Have you tried again, yet?

[identity profile] lizey.livejournal.com 2007-12-01 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Level 48. So much fun. And they've changed it to 20 grains. My medical-student vocabulary came in handy, as did the high school Latin.

[identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
And I thought that getting 780 before I got bored was good :)
