1. Anita Blake -- Anita: What can I say? She's just so complicated. She's parts brave, strong, confused. There are times I just want to slap her, as I'm sure anyone who's read my longer fanfic will know. All in all, I have much Anita love.
2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- Tara: I really like the way Tara progressed in the show. She made choices, and lived with those. We saw her grow out of Willow's sphere, and become her own person, someone who was strong and a good person. Then shegot a large wooden pole driven through her chest by Reavers got shot, which made me cry. Damn you, Joss.
Also, a lot of people guessed Dawn for this one. I do like the character, but as I write her, not so much as she was in the series, sadly.
3. Pretender -- Miss Parker: I am a sucker for well-fleshed-out bad guys. And Miss Parker is one of those. Her delivery of the caustic lines makes me giggle, and her weary reactions at Jared's pranks are perfect. Anyone see the episode where she has to look after Broot's daughter? Brilliant.
4. Highlander -- Methos: What's not to love about the Old Guy? (Or is that the Really Old Guy?) Mad props to Duncan for bringing him, kicking and screaming, back into the world. I think I also have a thing for the sarcastic ones.
5. Babylon 5 -- Delenn: I've tried often to explain why I like Delenn so much, and usually fail. Of all the characters on B5, she was the one I was always on side with. Um, yeah.
6. Smallville -- Chloe: The best friend... plus she's just so adorable. When I was going through my "I want to be a reporter" stage, I really thought Chloe was cool. She still is, because Allison Mack plays her so well.
7. Harry Potter -- Hagrid: I find it hard to write Hagrid, and I dislike a lot of what's been done with him in fanon, but I do like Hagrid's portrayal in the books more than anyone else. He's very loyal, and a great friend. That he can't see how dangerous his pets can be cracks me up. But in Third Year, after Buckbeak attacked Draco in class, watching Hagrid's confidence vanish (flobberworms, anyone?) just broke my heart. I think JKR must have a lot of fun writing Hagrid, because he's always very IC (which I know is silly to say about an author and her characters, but sometimes you can see the ambivalence about a certain character by the way it is written -- see Ronnie in the AB books).
8. Stargate SG-1 -- Sam: For the first little while, I was sort of ambivalent about Sam, then "In the Line of Duty" aired and I was hooked. Sooper-smart scientists rock my world.
9. Millennium -- Lucy Butler: How often do you come across a character that is pure evil? Seriously? The Lucy Butler episodes are my favourites in Millennium. She is a perfect foil for Frank. When she's around, Frank has a tangible enemy, and it sharpens his character.
10. Kindred the Embraced -- Lillie: Even though the show only ran for nine episodes, I 'got' Lillie the most. I'm not sure if this was because the character was based on the real-life Lillie Langtry, and so there was a more solid base upon which to build her. Anyway, the jealousy that Lillie expressed about Alexandra, then Catlin, when Julian was involved, was tempered with enough humanity. Then, after Lillie betrayed Julian to Eddie, her scene with Daedelus (then chopping Eddie's head off) was her way of redemption after a sort. I'm a sucker for betrayal/redemption stories.
11. Merry Gentry -- Doyle: Doyle's a schemer, but he's also such a wounded soul. What Andais told Merry, that Doyle would be a true king, I agree with. He'd be an equal to Merry, in terms of wanting to save Faeire and protect their people. He's the one I'd want at my back... in a fight! A fight! Sheesh, you people are pervs.
12. X-Men -- Jean Grey/Phoenix: It doesn't hurt that I've had a total girl crush on Famke Jansen since Goldeneye, but the hidden potential, literally burning below the surface, in the early days of both the comics and the films makes me love this character. Knowing what's in the comics makes me think I know what's to come in the third movie, with her. Squee!
13. Firefly -- River: Broken, fragile girl. The "unknown" in the series. Watching her try to rebuild her broken mind was fascinating. Have I mentioned recently how much I love Joss Whedon?
14. Due South -- Fraser: Oh, Canada. A land of snow and waste, along with Mounties. The "Stranger in a Strange Land" thing can get old if done badly, but watching Fraser play off his jaded American counterpart always cracked me up. Hey, now I know what I want for my birthday. They've got this on DVD now, right?
15. Earth2 -- Julia: See No. 10 above for my fascination with the betrayal and redemption schtick. Julia changed the most during the series. At heart, she will help people (that's why she worked with Reilly at first, to help all those people on the station) no matter what.
16. Xena -- Callisto: She's bad, and she loves it. Introducing the character was so much fun, then Lucy Lawless's accident necessitated the body swap episodes. Those are always fun (needless to say, I'm a huge fan of the Buffy/Faith swap). But making us understand such a horrible character, how she'd become so evil (making it Xena's fault, too, was fun), drew me in.
17. CSI -- Grissom: Oh, much science love. Gris is dorky and smart and witty and you know that he cares so much. Plus he's cute. I took a couple semesters of entomology in university and feel the tiniest bit of fellowship with Gris when he's talking about bugs to an obviously clueless Nick.
18. Underworld -- Selene: Vampire chick with guns and a chip on her shoulder the size of Nebraska? Oh yeah. There's something very no-nonsense about her reactions to things. And yes, I'll be in the theatre in a couple of weeks for U: Evolution (titled Underground: Intelligent Design in Kansas).
19. Profiler -- Sam: Always Sam. I think the best thing about Sam is that she's a mother first, and crime fighter second, even considering the big bad after her.
20. Anita Blake (second character) -- Nathaniel: The way he's been developing in the last few books because of Anita (or maybe in spite of her) is a neat thing to me. He's such a little schemer. To get himself a safe place, of course, but it's still quite masterful. Don't get me wrong, I love the character. I just think that Anita's really clueless sometimes when it comes to Nate.
