Date: 2007-10-22 05:53 am (UTC). . first, a guy named Gaston Leroux wrote a book.
Then some other people made a couple movies and a musical out of it, that you've never heard of. We don't care much about them anyway.
Then a guy named Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical out of it. You've probably heard of that one. It's a bit different from the original book.
Then a lady named Susan Kay wrote a book based on the first book, expanding the canon back to the title character's birth. The fans loved and worshipped her.
Then that Andrew Lloyd Webber guy made a movie version of his musical - only it's a little different than the original musical. Same characters, same music, variable sequence of plot points.
. . and the fandom?
Is all of that tossed into a blender.
My fic is 99.9% movie-based, though I borrow the Phantom's name from the original Leroux.
The fandom is also populated by a scary number of squeeing Gerard Butler fangirls (I maintain that I do not fall into this catagory if I squee very quietly). It's . . scary . . at times. Then there are the book-'verse purists, who can be kinda snitty with musical/movie fans, though some of them are nice. And due to the nature of the canon storyline, there are some VERY squicky fics out there, but I suppose that's true in any fandom.
So . . in summary . . you know you wanna. ;)
