If I wanted to bring up my biology degree for a moment for some Tin Man meta...

(and bear with me while I wax philosophic)
So, in humans, blue eyes are a recessive trait (b), while brown eyes (B) are dominant. That means that both parents have to have at least one blue eye gene (b) for their child to have blue eyes. As brown eyes are dominant (B), a parent who has both a blue eye gene (b) and a brown eye gene (B) in their chromosomes (Bb) will display brown eyes, but could pass on the blue eye gene to their children.

A blue-eyed parent would have two blue eye recessive genes (bb) and would have to pass on the blue eye gene to their offspring.

Only if both parents pass on a blue eye gene will the child have blue eyes.

yea yeah, get to the point

So two blue eye parents are by nature (bb)x(bb). It is not possible for two blue-eyed parents to have a brown eyed child (Bb or BB).

You were talking Tin Man?

Lavender Eyes/Queen had blueish eyes (bb)
Ahamo had blue eyes (bb)
DG has blue eyes (bb)

Alzadellia has brown eyes (Bb)

Ergo, Azkadelia had a different daddy...

Oh, could you imagine the fic on that one?

Yes, I know, it's a tv show and it's just casting of actors, but it's all about potential, baby.

Now that would make an interesting fic. I've seen stories where Jeb has a different dad (Zero, for obvious angst purposes) but not Az.

Would make sense though-- I mean, if the Queen had had a more noble O.Z. husband first who was Az's father, then it's a lot less eyebrow-worthy that she married an artist/carnie Slipper afterward. And if Az was little enough at the time, of course both girls would still call him Daddy.

...There are other possibilities, of course; and lots of complications any way it's set up. But-- interesting. You thinking about ficcing it?

It would be interesting for sure, with some lingering resentment from Az as to why DG was always treated special (the child born from love v. the child born from duty) and some daddy issues.

What little we saw of Ahamo, he was as invested in Az (even possessed Az) as DG - not the 'oh save the world' part but worrying about her life.

I'm thinking of ficcing it, or bringing it into play, but I'll need to think on it for a while. I'm not much into maudlin, although I'll kick it with melodramatic.

Hmmm. Ambrose/Glitch has brown eyes, yes?

. . .

I've written Tin Man fic. DG/Cain. If that doesn't squick you, wanna beta?

Oh, I love your brain! Very interesting :P

And I'd love to beta. Send it over. I think DG/Cain can be interesting... yeah, he's old enough to be her father, but whatever.

You know, I thought the same thing about the movie version of Golden Compass - Lyra had brown eyes. Her two supposed parents had very, very blue eyes. Oops.

Hee. Having only made it through part of the story, I still gathered that the girls must have had different fathers.

And another thank you for this idea. It's not leaving me alone. O noes!

ps thnx ;)

I know it's all due to the actresses etc, but... still. I can see a link in a haystack when it comes to my fandom, um, obsessions.

I think the eye thing was the first bit of human biology I learned that I still remember from classes.

The father refers to his daughters, plural, more than once. That's where it's left, anyway :)

I read a story once where Ambrose was the father of Azkadillia but Lavender Eyes met and fell for Ahamo so soon after getting pregnant with her that everyone just assumed she was Ahamos. It was interesting.

Ambrose/Glitch has a lot of theories surrounding his relationship with the Queen. It seemed to me he had a unreturned love for her, but some people think the paiting of the two suggusts they were related some how. *shrugs*

Interesting theory and for fic purposes, I say go forth and fic it!!

But, it is possible to have two blue eyed parents have a brown eyes baby. A repressed (B) gene in a parent can be passed on. That's what happened to me and my brother, actually. And we are the spitting image of our father, otherwise...

But this biology discussion gave me great pause in high school. *grins* I remember thinking... "WHAT?! NOOOOOO!"

(I'm totally digging on the idea of Ambrose x Queen = Az, though...)

Hee! Glad I could plant an idea in your head! :D

Will email about that beta.

How ya doing?

I'm doing good. As you've seen from my lj recently, I've been eaten by the world's strangest crossover. Not even funny.

And RL still is blah :) But hey it's the weekend and if writing makes me happy, then good!

How are you doing?

*snerk* I love that you are evaluating the genetic possibilities in Tin Man.

You are totally correct...though perhaps the genetics of eye color are differnt in the O.Z.? :D

In grade 10 biology when we started learning about genetics, my science teacher told our class about a time years previously when in the pre-lesson discussion a student had told him that both her parents had blue eyes. Noting that this student had brown eyes, he taught the entire lesson backwards so she would think that blue was the dominant trait and brown was the recessive trait in order to not reveal to her that "her mom was overly friendly with the mailman," (his phrase).

I have no idea whether that was actually a true story or not, but I have NEVER forgotten anything I learned that year about dominant and recessive eye colour.
