I will admit, the first incarnation of this story I was trying to figure out a way for them to be brother and sister, but it wouldn't mesh in my head. I can't see John abandoning his *sister* (he's got a real family thing), not someone he knew all his life, but a cousin he met when he was 20? Yeah, I can see that.
