Couple of fluffy ficlettes from August. Had to stop working on Switchback for a few days; was getting too depressed. Not sure what's next. We'll see.
Title: Fun?

Characters: The title characters
Rating: PG

"Want some cotton candy?"
Anita shook her head. "I don't see why, after the week of chasing monsters that we just had, you wanted to come to the Circus of the Damned to unwind."
Buffy shrugged. "Come on, this is St. Louis's main tourist attraction. See a vampire and ride the carousel, all in one night."
Anita felt like growling. "I hope you're teasing."
"Of course I am." Buffy dropped her half-eaten cotton candy into a handy garbage bin. "But you saw how much media attention our little hootenanny caused downtown."
Not one to normally read the papers, Anita had glanced at newspapers that morning, and nearly had a stroke. Apparently the week-long monster hunt along the waterfront had been quite the center of media attention. Half the front section was devoted to the destruction Anita and Buffy had caused, complete with some very unflattering pictures of the two executioners.
"I saw it. So what?"
Buffy nodded toward a passing human family. The parents gawked openly at the two women as they walked past slowly.
"Here, we're just part of the entertainment," Buffy said when the family was out of ear-shot. "No one's going to be all freaking out when they see us. We can just have some old-fashioned, good clean fun."
Anita watched as a couple of werewolves bounded by. They waved shyly at Anita as they dissapered into the crowd.
"I guess you're right," Anita told Buffy grudgingly.
"Of course I am." Buffy glanced up, and broke into a wide grin. "Oh! A Ferris wheel! Ever been on it?"
"Yes, but--"
"Come on, then! You need more fun in your diet."
As Anita let herself be dragged along, she had to admit that Buffy had a point.
Not that she'd say that, of course.

Title: Fine Taste
Crossover fandom: Harry Potter/Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Rating: PG

Xander leaned against an out-of-the-way wall, hoping to avoid getting dragged into the "fun" at Dawn’s wedding.
Dawn. Wedding. As in a married Dawn. Xander shook his head at words. Who would have guessed that Dawn would be the first of the Sunnydale gang to get married? And to a werewolf more than twice her age?
It had taken about six months and huge long-distance bills for Dawn to convince Buffy and Willow that she knew what she was going. Xander had taken longer. A lot longer. In fact, he hadn't even been really convinced when Dawn was walking down the aisle of the outdoor chapel, Buffy at her side, dressed in white with flowers in her hair and more grown-up than Xander could ever have imagined.
He’d had to blink away painful tears. As Dawn walked toward Remus Lupin, a giddy smile on her face, all Xander had seen was Anya, so beautiful in her dress, the day she was supposed to become his wife.
Now, the guests were in the middle of some weird dance, sort of like line-dancing back home but with more guys in dresses. Xander let his eye drift over the assembled crowd. Most were Remus's friends, those strange wizards that Xander and the girls hadn't known existed, but Dawn had managed to manipulate Giles into flying out a bunch of the Slayerettes to England for the wedding. Given the amount of magical and mystical power in the place, it was surprising that no one had exploded yet.
The music changed, and the women in the crowd started looking for new partners. Xander took that as a hint that it was time to go in search of more punch.
A tall, dour man stood by the bar, glowering down at the punch bowl. Xander ignored him and took up the ladle to scoop himself another drink.
"What is this... dreck?" the man sneered.
Xander sniffed his cup, then took a tiny taste. "Swamp water," he said.
The man's incredulous expression spoke volumes.
"The girls must have gotten to it," Xander said with a fake grin. The man must have been one of Remus's guests, although Xander couldn’t quite recall his name.
"Indeed." The man glanced past Xander, and his face underwent the strangest contortion. Xander turned around.
There, on the dance floor, Dawn was dancing with a young man with messy black hair. They stood as far apart as humanly possible while still touching, dancing as awkwardly as a couple of sixth-graders at a formal.
Remus and Willow, who had become fast friends, were on the other side of the dance floor observing the same scene as Xander. Remus was trying hard to keep a grin off his face.
"I must say, I had some severe doubts about Ms. Summers, or should I say Mrs. Lupin's, intellect when she agreed to marry Lupin," the man said silkily from behind Xander, "Until I saw her extreme distaste for Harry Potter."
The dance ended with Dawn and Harry bolting in opposite directions.
"A woman of fine taste, indeed."

Thank you. It's only the second day, but there is a dearth of laughter on my school's campus. Already my spirits are depressed; much laughter is needed.

Date: 2006-01-11 02:48 am (UTC)Anita and Buffy are a conundrum. On the one hand, they both seem to live for the hunt, but they go at it from such different angles that I can see it taking a long time for them to get used to each other. So I tend to skip that part and get right to the nitty-gritty.

Date: 2006-01-11 05:00 am (UTC)And hooray for Dawn for talking Remus into marrying her! (And for Xander for being able to stand next to Snape for more than thirty seconds. Then again, Xander strikes me as being very Hagrid-like, and Snape's never said a word against Hagrid.)

Date: 2006-01-11 02:52 pm (UTC)You're right about Snape and Hagrid, I hadn't thought about that before. Snape's never really said anything against any of the teachers, in Harry's hearing. (Of course, Hagrid stuck up for Snape until the bitter end with the evidence of Dumbledore's body. Huh.) Now I have more stuff to think over!
