*is a bad fan*
Feb. 2nd, 2006 05:34 pmI passed up the chance today to buy a shiny first edition of "Kiss of Shadows". My rational was that, even though I have all of Laurell K. Hamilton's other Merry Gentry books in hard cover, I already own a copy of KoS in paperback (that I bought at the same second-hand shop). I'm a bad fan.
On the other hand, a good buddy of mine might be able to get Tanya Huff to sign something for me in a few months. Whee!

Date: 2006-02-03 06:43 pm (UTC)Long time reader, but first time poster here. I'm not particularly shy or anything. It's just that by the time I read new entries here, about five other people will have already said what I would have said.
And I'd bet the Huff so talked to a couple of production people for Forever Knight when she was planning out the Smoke books. I've never heard of the FK cast having that sort of huge ego problem one of the Smoke actors does, but so much else sounds like a FK shout out.

Must go and buy more of Tanya Huff's Blood series.

Date: 2006-02-03 05:30 am (UTC)I have been buying most of LKH's latest books in hardback, because I can't wait for paperback. Hell, I buy the books with as much compusion as JRK, only LKH gets more of my money because she publishes more frequently.
Heck, I need to *finish* her Blood series. I lurved the first book, tho. Very fun in a creepy sort of way.

Date: 2006-02-03 02:52 pm (UTC)Or are you trying to get me to write more of my Dust Motes (http://www.tthfanfic.com/Story-8271/Mhalachai+Dust+Motes.htm) universe?

Date: 2006-02-03 08:41 pm (UTC)Actually, I was put in mind of Dawn in your SH/BtVS crossover, and the grim decision Dawn is compelled to make in order to Save The World. River, if she were in Dawn's shoes, would likely do the same thing.

Date: 2006-02-05 06:21 am (UTC)And damn it. I just thought of a Dawn/River scene from Dust Motes... where they scare the crap out of Jayne, talking about how many men River's killed. Man, I can't afford to write this weekend!

Date: 2006-02-03 03:18 pm (UTC)I'm not sure if you are aware of this but a few of us are doing a Firefly fanfiction and fanvid awards called the The Blue Sun Fandom Awards, aka The Strawberries, and I wanted to let you know that the following have been nominated:
-Different Eyes
http://www.tthfanfic.com/story.php?no=7462
crossover
Let us know if you would mind letting your story participate and if you agree with these category assignments or would prefer to have your stories in a different category. Also, stories are eligible to compete only in two different categories and you as an author can only have five stories compete in any single category (but this applies to all categories so you could have 30 plus if that was how many were nommed). A full list of the guidelines can be found on the website.
If you have a link to an archived version that you would prefer to have used for judging, please pass it along to us. Otherwise we will go with the version that was nominated. Additionally, if you would like to change the draft or anything, you can give us a new story link or change this one until February 10.
We would also be interested in archiving the story if it is selected as a winner. If you do not want to be archived on our site then we would like to present a link to the archived version of your choice.
If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail bsastrawberries@yahoo.com. You can also visit our message board at http://www.livejournal.com/community/bsastrawberries/ or our website, http://mysite.verizon.net/vzenvl6n/bsastrawberries/index.html.

Date: 2006-02-05 06:18 am (UTC)Actually, the secret is this: Tanya Huff is a big filk fan. My buddy is going to a filk-con where Ms. Huff will be. Lucky me.
And I have to read those Smoke books! My library doesn't have any of them and it's driving me nuts.

Date: 2006-02-04 11:36 am (UTC)I've ben reading (lurking)your fic for a while, and have friended you. Not a big LJer, but quietly love fan fic. (I'm really not sure of the etiquette of this.. does it show?)
I read your Mind the Gap series on Tth, and then went on to read all the others. I love your writing style, and the way you don't bash characters just for the sake of it. Your plots are really well thought out and I get really absorbed into the worlds you write. I have spent several hours reading your stories instead of working when I just told myself I would read *one* chapter at lunch....
Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know I read your stories and enjoy them immensely. Thanks for sharing them online.
Re: Friend-ing
Date: 2006-02-05 06:12 am (UTC)*goes off to friend back*
I'm glad you're liking the stories! I have a philosophy about character bashing -- I don't do it. A lot of the characters I write (Dawn, Anita, Harry) have reasons when they're acting pissy. Bashing (i.e. treating a character badly) isn't my thing. If I really dislike a character, I tend not to write them at all. The only exception to that is Voldemort, mostly because he's eeevil.
Feel free to swing by and comment any time. I do love to talk about my writing ;)

Date: 2006-02-06 06:46 am (UTC)*waves* Hi. I discovered your LJ after reading Inevitable and figured I'd say hello and friend you. I've read many of your other stories and drabbles, and I don't think I've ever read any fanfics more true to the personalities of the AB characters - Anita especially - than your own. I know that writing them can be especially difficult, but you really do have a firm grasp from what I've read on all the characters you write. It's one of the main attractions that pulls me in to your fanfics. Everything comes off as so believable and real that I can't seem to tear myself away, even when there are points that usually I would avoid. I am, admittedly, not a large fan of Harry/Ginny, but I find myself not minding it as much when I read Inevitable, something that surprises me. It just doesn't seem to matter as I read, because it's Harry, and it's what he, as a teenager growing up, is feeling and relationships are a part of that. So as I sit and read the later chapters with the Harry/Ginny hints, I find myself not only not minding, but enjoying it.
And that is never something I thought I'd ever say before. Much love~
