SPN recs, a note, and hello to you!
Nov. 10th, 2006 05:32 pmI wrote 1800 words of crossover goodness today, but then work derailed me. Hiatus tentatively called off on account of writing. Will advise.
Some Supernatural fic recs, because the fandom is just so shiny. No rhyme, order or reason. Let me know if you have others, KTHNX.
Also, if there are episodic spoilers, I'll tell you.
In no order:
by
flipmontigirl:
and my heart the shape of a begging bowl: It's the only word he remembers.
and its companion piece
For the soul without a king: John Winchester walks through her kitchen door one morning in the fall.
Both pieces contain spoilers for early season two (before No Exit). Both NC-17, Sam/Ellen. Currently my fave het pieces on the whole internets.
The Winchester Bestiary by
mcee. Gen, Sam-centric, rated G.
Summary: When Sam Winchester was nine, there were monsters under his bed and his dad gave him a .45, a flashlight, and a pat on the shoulder.
A great Sam fic.
Revisionist History by
dodger_winslow. Gen, PG13, The Usual Suspects SPOILERS.
Summary: How stupid do you think I am? Evidently, Diana thinks more than just a little.
(i.e.
dodger_winslow rewrites the end of US for our reading enjoyment)
Count On by
eloise_bright. Gen, Wee!chesters, rated PG. Vague Bloodlust spoilers. Happy and fun.
Summary: Sam counts on Dean. A lot.
Fun training session, shows a lot about the relationship between the boys as kids and about John's training tactics.
A Mile In Another's Shoes by
flawedamythyst. PG, Gen. Sam and Dean.
No real summary, but this is a body!swap fic. I'm usually leery of these, but this one really works. It deals with certain issues and is just wholesome fun, showing us our guys in strange situations with oddness.
Hunter by
tigriswolf. PG-13, Gen, Bloodlust SPOILERS. Sam and Dean through another's eyes.
No summary again, but it's a Bloodlust fic from Gordon's POV. Well, sort of. It's the only story I've ever liked that is second-person POV, which usually makes my teeth itch. This, however, works well with Gordon's... let's just say his disconnect with reality.
The Only Stop On The Road by
niannahfic. PG-15, Ellen/John. Spoilers for the Clown ep.
Summary: John's only refuge in the fight.
This one was pretty much destroyed by the events in No Exit, but at the same time, it's really well written and feels *right*.
Bat Country by
ishafel. Rated R, Ellen/John/Billy, warning for threesomeness. Spoilers for No Exit.
Summary: Nothing about this is right.
I like this one because a) I'm a troublemaker and b) this might explain Ellen's angst at the whole Jo thing in No Exit. Also see above re troublemaker.
And last but not least: EVERYTHING Supernatural-related written recently by Jinni (
jinnifanfic). This includes her SPN crossovers and her pure SPN fics. Go. Read. Now.
That's it for now.
Also, a great weekend idea, snagged from
ithidrial:
This weekend, pick out three of your favorite writers, those you’ve been reading regularly --- probably for *years* ---and send them a private note telling them you’re out there. Just that. Even if you’ve never, ever done it before. Even if you write yourself. Any fandom, all your fandoms, etc.
(And when I say your favorite writer, I don't mean me. This is not a plea for attention, although if you want to say hi to me, you can do that to. I'll say hi back, and we can have a great big hi-fest.)

Date: 2006-11-11 07:58 am (UTC)My main issue with that is the inherent power imbalance. It's been indicated that before Sam went away, he was very much the younger one in the family, while Dean looked out for him. There was strick child/adult roles there. It's not as apparent as with the River/Simon Tamcest stuff in the Firefly fandom, the power imbalance and the inherent abuse of the relationship, but it's there if you go back that far.
However, it's a little less squicky if you think that the idea wasn't sparked until *after* Sam started hunting with Dean again, putting them on a more equal footing. Because really, the two of them are equals on the show.
It might seem like I'm trying to justify the strange and immoral, but meh. I can blame the tequila tonight.
As an aside, your icon is making it hard for me to type.

Date: 2006-11-11 12:29 pm (UTC)If you're justifying away the immoral, it's working, because I can totally see your point. I mean, I don't think I'll be seeking out Wincest out of sheer desire to read about the boys getting it on, but I also won't avoid it if it's well written. Especially if it's well written by someone I know.
Big plans for the weekend?

Like Jinni? I hear ya.
Weekend plans involve sleeping and writing, in that order. Fun times.

Date: 2006-11-12 06:20 am (UTC)I have a hard time with the ones where they're kids doing stuff like that... because, I mean... underage is a little squicksome no matter what, you know? And yeah, definite power issues - although sometimes you have to wonder if Sam didn't have more power over Dean than Dean did over Sam, despite their ages. Sammy got whatever he wanted from Dean, ya know?
And, I'm agreeing with you on her icon. V.v.v.v.v. distracting. *drools* Wonder if I can get some fic written in the next 4 hours while I wait for it to be time to take mom to the airport (skipping sleep altogether tonight, just for kicks).

Date: 2006-11-11 02:31 am (UTC)You made me grin so hugely with this. Thank you so much. I'm tickled that you're enjoying my little pieces of SPN fun. Mom is in town, otherwise I'd be writing even more! Like the Sam-POV sequel-ish thing to "The Normal Sister".

Date: 2006-11-11 08:10 am (UTC)Plus, your brain kicks up some great plot angles. I know how fun that is, the writer in you getting ideas and just running with them.
Writing is crack. Why is it that crossovers are so much more fun to write than straight fics? I wish I knew. But hey, I'm not going to question it (too hard)

Date: 2006-11-12 06:17 am (UTC)I'll have to see what levels of depravity I can manage this upcoming week. Anything to get my mind off of school/work.

Date: 2006-11-11 03:07 am (UTC)I may actually get up the nerve to write a SPN fic soon. If I download Season 1 episodes and then get caught up, you may see something groovy...
As for my NaNo Fic of Doom... well, today I admitted that although I wrote a grand total of 25,000 words, half of the requirement, I need to edit it. I got halfway through the story and wrote a plot outline. Then I realized that it's starting to bore me. This is not good, but it's expected. So I decided to use today as a research day. I am boning up on my knowledge of the kitsune, Asian fox-like beings. I've decided to put a different spin on the story, which is taking it in a new direction and ultimately is more pleasing. *my original concept had been a lesbian werefox falling for a modern-day witch*
Truth be told, as soon as I nixed writing a supernatural mystery, the story lost its purpose. So I'm approaching this differently, and shoving a lot of what I wrote temporarily into a backstory file. That way, I can pick and choose what I like and save the rest for another story.

Date: 2006-11-14 01:23 am (UTC)That's the thing about writing, it's all so transient. The first chapter of Inevitable was at one time a section of a much larger monster crossover (which luckily never saw the light of day). We authors control worlds, and it's awesome :D

Date: 2006-11-12 07:37 am (UTC)So, yeah, thanks for the links! I didn't even know that Jinni was writing SPN fic; I've only ever read her BtVS stuff before.
I'd rec you SPN fic, but... um. I've sorta succumbed entirely to the dirty dirty hotness of the Wincest. Um. I'll look through my bookmarks/lj favorites and see if I have any non-porny fics saved... Oh, or actually, I'm gonna be doing a fic rec post sometime soon, so I'll just include some SPN fic there!
Sorry, it's late, and I'm rambling incoherently.
*glomps*

Date: 2006-11-14 12:50 am (UTC)but hey, I'm all about the incoherent rambling. See my fics, for example. I live to feed fandom addictions. Jinni only started writing SPN in recent months.
I look forward to your recs :D

Date: 2006-11-14 08:33 am (UTC)But god, it's just the most cracktastic unmanip'd image ever, isn't it? *g*
And the recs will likely come tomorrow night, if the procrastination-fu is strong in me...

Date: 2006-11-14 08:58 am (UTC)Seriously, if the soulful floppy emo!boy hair of angst is so long that it requires pink scrunchies to restrain it between takes, it's too long
Exactly! I love how the scrunchies are *pink*, too. So manly. (No wonder Dean is always calling Sam a girl)

Supernatural is so cool. I can't wait for Thursday.

Date: 2006-11-16 11:50 am (UTC)I actually came here by way of your SGA/HP fic 'Songs across the ocean', but then kept on coming back when I realised you write fic for other stuff I like. :D

Date: 2006-11-20 10:54 pm (UTC)It's awesome that you stuck around :D I do tend to skip all over fandom, with whatever strikes my fancy. Mostly crossovers, which are just so much fun, but you know that :) I am currently loving this Supernatural stuff. Those boys are just too cool for school.

Date: 2006-12-06 02:48 am (UTC)In conclusion, I would like to recommend you read some rather neutral stories. I don't generally like wincest or pairings, so hopefully you like some Wee!Winchesters. Ah, well, here you go...
