Note: Takes place between Songs Across the Oceans and Ancient Blood.
It's the little things, things Sheppard himself probably doesn't know he's doing. How the doors in the City of the Ancestors open for him when he approaches. How panels light up, begging for his touch. McKay may rant about how the Colonel's Ancient genes make the city respond, but McKay doesn't see what Ronon sees.
Not how the city responds to John.
But how John responds to the city and the people in it.
In his years on the Run, Ronon forgot what a home was like. Without Melena, without his people, there could never be a home again. Or so he thought.
Then Sheppard came, dragged Ronon back to Atlantis, made him think about living, not just surviving.
Ronon can't understand how Sheppard does it. It makes no sense, the way Sheppard turns everyone upside down, makes cowards and children follow him, makes them into heroes in their own right. Sheppard says it was something in every one of them... but Ronon knows heroes, and he knows cowards. He knows that people needed a leader to be great, and that purpose can turn dark and broken with the wrong sort of influence.
Sheppard is a leader. But what Ronon knows in his blood is that that Sheppard has done this before, has led the hopeless to victory, regardless the cost.
These are things that Ronon sees.
But there is more to it than that.
Gradually, Ronon realizes what it is. Sometimes, Sheppard will reach for something that was just out of reach... and suddenly it will be in his hand. it's just by a fraction of a cetar, but it's enough.
Or like when he's trying to get the attention of people, and the walls of the room he's in change just a little, for the sound to carry better.
Or when Sheppard seems to read the minds of his men, solves problems before they arise, sooths egos and pushes people to their full potential.
Ronon's people had words for people like Sheppard. People who could move things with their minds, move people with their thoughts, twist the fabric of reality into tatters. For eons, Satedans had sought out these men and women, had slaughtered them in their beds to prevent the spread of their contagion of evil.
Ronon had never met a man who could move reality like that, until John Sheppard.
And he does nothing but watch.
He knows evil. He knows what men can derive from power, and he knows, through bitter experience, how such men can destroy everything.
So when Sheppard pulls a cup towards him using his mind, when he coaxes the city into changing the color of the walls just a fraction so it's easier to read, when John Sheppard make things better than they were before...
Ronon watches. And he does nothing, except willingly follow where Sheppard will lead him.

Date: 2006-12-14 05:24 am (UTC)Ronon is awesome. He takes what he knows and he applies what he sees and then he comes to his own laconic conclusion and saves the day. Much Ronon love.
