The gods in payroll have smiled on me, and now I have a little extra cash to spend. Only a little, so I'm contemplating buying one thing only: an ergonomic office chair.

Anyway.

I last recc'ed this in March, 2005, but it's still awesome.

Blood Magic by gatewaygirl: A Severitus response. Blood magic was supposed to keep Harry safe, but his relatives are expendable. Blood magic was supposed to keep Harry looking like his adoptive father, but it's wearing off. Blood is a bond, but so is the memory of hate -- or love.

It's certainly interesting in light of what happened in Deathly Hallows *cough* One thing I like about this story is how it's both sweet and pragmatic.

PS I hate writer's block. Of all the characters in Harry Potter, why does Remus have to be the most difficult to write?

ooo I reread that about a month ago, I was amazed to find that it was still about as good as the first time I read it through. I started reading that one when she was still posting chapters on ff.net, probably around when she first started posting it.

Blood Magic is one of the HP fics I keep coming back to. A lot of the fic I enjoyed my first time in the fandom didn't stand up to the re-read test (my 'Whee! New Fandom' glee of 2004 helped gloss over a lot of faults in the fics I was reading) but BM is as good on the fifth re-read as it was on the first.

Remus is tough to write because he's so passive-aggressive. Think of Asher-plus-Damian, except as a wolf and not a vamp.

This fic is the one that kept me up nights. And nights and more nights, reading it on and on... now again.

I love that fic. "Severitus" is such an interesting concept, and that's one of the few that actually ran with the notion and played it out in a detailed and fairly logical fashion.

As far as Remus? IMHO, he's hard to write because early on in the series he's practically coated in Teflon; he's very good at saying the Right Thing without telling you how he actually feels about it. It isn't until late in the series, especially DH, that he actually drops the self-protective facade and lets himself feel openly, where Harry (and thus the reader) can really see it. That makes him hard to get a handle on as a writer.
