It occurred to me last night that I have a real weakness for writing "real family" crossovers. I know, it's not like it's a big secret or anything, because you've all read these fic things, but I think it's time for a list.

Real Family fics (to date) by Mhalachai

Inevitable (Anita Blake/Harry Potter): Harry Potter is Damian's grandson.

Physics of the Spin (Gilmore Girls/Stargate): Rory Gilmore is Rodney McKay's daughter.

Hey Little Sister (Supernatural/Stargate Atlantis): Elizabeth Weir is John Winchester's cousin.

Obituary (Anita Blake/Buffy the Vampire Slayer): Nathaniel Graison is Joyce Summers' nephew.

Secrets series (Firefly/Merry Gentry): Inara Sera is the ever-so-great-granddaughter of Merry Gentry and Doyle.

Demons, Eh? (Supernatural): Sam Winchester is the spawn of the Celine Demon.

The Roadhouse Series (Angel/Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Supernatural): Angel and Ellen Harvelle are parents to lil' Jo Harvelle.

Outside Looking In (Anita Blake/Supernatural): Sarah Blake (SPN) is cousin to Anita Blake.

Dark Vancouver Nights (Harry Potter/Tanya Huff's Smoke books): Harry Potter and Lee Nicholas are distant cousins.

Mirror'd Through the Rift (Torchwood/Dr. Who): Gwen Cooper is the twin sister of Gwyneth, servant girl in 1869 Cardiff.

I need some srs help. Either that, or I need to challenge myself to write more of these lovely crazy stories.

I loved the John W./Elizabeth Weir story. I always wondered if you were ever gonna write a follow-up. *pokes*

I always tried to come up with a sequel that didn't feel like a cop-out... Everything I did develop seemed rather trite.

Maybe I could make Elizabeth evil. That might be fun.... *ponderz*

Well she is a replicator now - time to bring in the Winchesters to cross her back to fully human - come on you know they could exorcise those nanites right out of her ;P

Or else we could have semi-not-evil repli!Liz v. Ruby and the other demons. Now *that* would be fun.

I must think on this more....

Ooh Interesting. Are nanites demonic or maybe immune to demonic influences? *hee* Look forward to see if you persue this

When I first saw the "real family" thing, I thought you meant the idea of "found families", i.e. Harry finding a place with Anita & crew in 'Inevitable', Dawn being adopted by Anita & crew in 'Dawning Light' . . okay that's all I can think of 'cause those are my favs right now. But you know what I mean.

. . you play with the family thing in 'Candelight', too. But I won't say how 'cause it's not fic-canon yet. :)

I could probably make another post with the "found families" - I do tend to have a lot of those as well.

And I srsly need to get back to Candlelight. The story's all still there in my head. It's one of those things, ya know?

It occurs to me that I'm being a little obtuse. I need some sleep.

That would be so wonderful if you got back to candlelight. It is such a wonderful series. ^_^

If you enjoy writing them, why stop? The stories are all different, they just have that common theme.

And you've written plenty of non-real family fics, too.

Don't get me wrong. I find the fact that I have a need to tie fandoms together with "family" fic simply fascinating. And I'm probably not going to stop :)

Of course, if this leads into me writing baby!fic, all bets are off.

I tend to write stories with a second generation. Either that second generation is the main subject of the story or they are included in the story. But there usually is at least one child in the story.

My friends have pointed this out to me often. I haven't been able to curb the trait yet.

From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
To tell a secret, most of my family!fics are the result of baby!fic. I tend to start off there and work backwards.

One day I will probably end up writing one of those kid@fics out....

Date: 2008-01-31 03:53 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Heh. Like I said a great deal (maybe 85%) of my fics are kid-based. I even have one X-files story that is almost completely the kids. Only they aren't really kids, they are adults (20 and 28 repectively). I have an Angel series that is based aroudn Spike's daughter Lizzie. My Doctor Who fic (whenever it finally decides to actually get written...right now its complete in my head but its refusing to be written) has the doctor and Rose having a daughter.

I really need to stop that.

I love your stories, and I love real family fics... which is actually kind of ironic, since I've never written any, even though I've got a million of 'em (okay, maybe just a dozen) in my head.

Seriously, your fic is wonderfully written, clever and original. Whatever you decide to write, I can't wait to read it.

I need to challenge myself to write more of these lovely crazy stories - Yes, please :) I'm such a sucker for real family fics.

A follow up to Outside Looking In would be lovely. I'm a big fan of Sarah and would love to see more good fic with her in it. Maybe the boys could make an appearance. Oh...that's scary. The Winchester boys in AB's St. Louis. Could be fun.

I've written one or two Winchester Boys in St. Louis fics... Let's just say that things didn't go the way that they would have imagined. Let me know if you want links :)

You're far from the only one - my most popular story to date, Family Issues (http://www.tthfanfic.com/Story-675/MarcusRowland+Family+Issues.htm), is a VERY weird (un)real family story with a horrendously complicated back story for Willow - starting out with the Men In Black coming to Sunnydale to look for an alien called Rosenburg... The sequel finds a real mother, I may eventually add a real father story if I can get round to writing it (and yes, the back story really is that complicated).

I've also done a real father for Jenny Calendar and one for Giles, had Judge Anderson (in Judge Dredd) as a reincarnation of Tara, Xander as the cousin of Smallville's sheriff in a Lois & Clark crossover, explained Modesty Blaise as a member of Jenny's gypsy tribe in an unfinished story, and most recently Kendra as Albus Dumbledore's great-great whatever grand niece in Dead Trouble. (http://www.tthfanfic.com/Story-13501/MarcusRowland+Dead+Trouble.htm). Also a few more in drabbles, I think.

So no, it isn't just you!

The only help you need is the time to write more of these :).

("real family" crossovers are tres tempting! I have a Five Winchester Relatives thing planned for when SPN hiatus drives me insane)

Real family crossovers are SO fun when done right. And since most TV families are so messed up anyway, it can be easy :)

hmm, if I were a phd I'd be throwing all kinds of mental mumbo jumbo at you explain how your writing of 'real family' shows ... in your own life and could possibly show that ... which is really quite natural for most ... to feel but really you should go to a ... and have a few discussion on the repercussions of your ... before it goes so far that you ... But of course this is only my professional opinion.

you know, i've never noticed that before until it was pointed out. Of course I don't think of crazy crossovers until they're written either! lol

Family is good.

I think it comes from your mother fandom, the AB one. That's really all about family, in its own twisted way.

Date: 2008-01-31 10:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
Huh. I hadn't thought about that before. It's really all about lost and discarded family, init?

^^ That's a good thing. These are my favorite type of crossover's.

It's a way that things can meld without meetings being strange, family is strange and wonderful.

Heh, today is the 31st, aint it? ^_^ Happy Bday!

happy birthday!

i don't see anything wrong with having so many fics with having a family link.

do you see yourself writing any new crossover fics once you are finished with the ones you have now? or do you think you will just write all in one fandom?

Date: 2008-02-01 06:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
Thanks!

I keep telling myself that one day I'll stop this fanfic nonsense... and then I discover a new fandom (right now it's Dr. Who and Torchwood) and come up with a whole slew of new stories to write.

If only there were more hours in the day. Or days in the weekend, actually...

I like your weird family kink. ;) There's something about them that just ... anchors the separate universes in your crossovers together faster, to me, even if they have to have more explanations woven into the story later to make them make sense. Or maybe I just like people finding family in unlikely places, both surrogate and real. (I love Harry being Damian's grandson. It just makes him really feel like he really belongs with Anita's group, no question about it.) Or maybe you're just really awesome with turning crack ideas into great, plausible stories.

By the way, to seem a little less random, I used to comment on your journal a lot under child_labor. It's been a while, so I don't know if you remember, haha. I was wondering if you'd mind me actually friending you, rather than just popping up here and there out of thin air? :)

And, by the way by the way, happy belated birthday!
