I've officially freaked myself out.
Summary: He's known her for a century, and he just can't stay away.
Disclaimer: Russell T. Davis and the BBC own it all.
Rating: R for dark themes.
Setting/Spoilers: Set in "Dean Man Walking" (TW 2x07), dealing with a character introduced in that show.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Little Girl
Words: 350
Notes: My regular readers may know what I mean when I say that Little Girl reminds me of Elsa from Inevitable. And they will not be reassured.

He can't stay away.
Every decade, he finds himself back across the table from her, tarot cards and tea the false reality between them. He tells himself it's to save the world, to save the team, but in the end it's all a lie.
He's there to save himself and he knows there is no salvation in her dark eyes.
She is older than he is by centuries. She saw the sun dawn on Christ's crucifixion, and every day since. She knows more about human nature than he ever will and he hates her for it.
She is the perfect disguise, he thinks. A little girl, helpless, innocent, perfect in her white dress and ribbons in her hair. But he is alone amongst the living in knowing the truth. He has seen her, blood-soaked amidst the screams of her victims, laughing as the bodies rot at her feet.
She knows the future, and that is Jack's weakness. She knows what is to come, she holds answers as belief, and he can't stay away.
She has the body of a child and the memories of a fallen angel and he hates himself beyond measure when he himself falls into her world, her blood-soaked touch, the perverse sanctuary he finds when he dies a little death at her hands.
She smiles down upon him, and every time he sees benediction in the way his blood drips from her mouth.
~~~
You'll owe me a favor, she says, with that smile that promises his downfall. She knows what folly he is about to commit.
He lets out a sharp breath, wondering how many times it will be that she will slit his throat and revel in his life's blood, before it is over.
He wonders how long he will be able to stay away from her this time, after the pain she will carve from his flesh.
He wonders if the agony and the glory she promises is why he can't stay away.
He wonders if the release that she grants him is why he will always come back.
He wonders.
No.
Not really.
He doesn't wonder.
After all, he knows how weak he is.
Date: 2008-02-21 12:11 pm (UTC)Among other cardinal rules of horror movies:
1. Don't tune out the creepy old guy who mentions the missing campers, etc. because chances are, you're going to wish you'd remembered the monster's weaknesses.
2. Don't split up. Don't even joke about splitting up.
3. If you hear a strange noise, don't walk towards it. If it's a cat making the noise, you can be sure that the killer is right behind while you're busy stroking Pussy.
4. If you notice your front door beginning to open, don't immediately run to see who's behind it. And if your disconnected phone rings, for god's sake, don't answer it!
Also, if you see a little girl carrying a physics book, get the hell out of Dodge, because the shit is about to hit. (Unless, of course, that little girl was me.)
Corollary: Applies to books of magick as well.
Date: 2008-02-21 03:37 pm (UTC)But I have this weird feeling that they've hung the little girl and her tea shop on the wall for later firing. They've still git six shows to go... but maybe it's wishful thinking on my part.
Date: 2008-02-21 03:53 pm (UTC)One little nit-pick though:
He lets out a sharp breath, wondering how many times it will be that she will sit his throat and revel in his life's blood, before it is over.
That should be "slit," right?
Date: 2008-02-21 04:33 pm (UTC)Little Girl is the plot shortcut to get the dohicky that does the thing, so she's really only in about 30 seconds at the beginning of the show, but they were a memorable 30 seconds, at least for me.
But hey, creepy child and a man who cannot die usually doesn't mean hugs and puppies.
Date: 2008-02-21 04:26 pm (UTC). . I haven't seen the episode (I really must start watching Torchwood, huh?), but from this . . I'm not quite getting an Elsa vibe. Elsa seems more . . residually human. She's got a couple centuries worth of issues but those issues come from an originally human place. 'Little girl' described above . . not so much.
. . however, I adore the idea of death as addictive.
Date: 2008-02-21 06:00 pm (UTC)I think that the reason I think of Elsa when I was writing Little Girl is that I know her backstory, in which she didn't have the veneer of civilization she does after 300, 400 years. I should write that story, "Inevitable: Hamlin".
I was in a strange mood last night (you know why in part) and the Spanish wine didn't help much to normalize me.
Did we know each other in 2004? I think perhaps we did not. So, here: http://cissasghost.livejournal.com/69192.html - your story reminded me of.
