FIC: Cut You Down (Supernatural) PG
Oct. 17th, 2006 08:14 amPS To everyone who skims my LJ, don't worry about this Supernatural trend. I'm working on some of those big continuing projects y'all love so much. More on that in a few days.
Summary: Death isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Disclaimer: Supernatural belongs to the CW and those nice folks. No profit has been made from this fic, and the only benefit to me is personal satisfaction and the creative process. I hope you enjoy.
Genre: Gen, oneshot
Characters: Well, that would be the spoiler, wouldn't it?
Rating: PG for swearing.
Words: 321
Spoilers: Spoiler-heavy for "In My Time of Dying" in season two of SPN.
Note: This is all Johnny Cash's fault.

This is the deal John Winchester made. He isn't surprised, and he's not sorry. He'd have given almost anything to save Dean's life, and not because of anything Sam said. John has his priorities, and as much as it burns in his gut that he made a deal with the devil instead of striking him dead, John did what was necessary.
His sons matter to him more than anything, in this world or the next.
Six months after he died, John adjusts his hat low over his eyes and watches through gaps in the gathered people, to where his boys are arguing with the gas inspector near a blown-out building. They don't look so good: Sam's lost those last few soft edges, the ones John thought were suicidal, and is now sharp and hard as a knife.
Dean hides it well, but John can see that he's drifting. It cuts at John when he realizes that he put that look on Dean's face, by leaving his boys the way he did.
But Dean is alive and Sam is alive and they're both still kicking. They'll get over it, John tells himself. He doesn't believe his own bullshit, but it's what he tells himself to stop from walking right over there and telling his boys the truth.
The demon couldn't take him to Hell, but he could pull John's ticket to the afterlife. Barred from Heaven and Hell, condemned to walk these roads forever, the demon had tried to make John harmless.
A smirk tugs at John's mouth as he watches Sammy flail those long arms. John is many things, in life and in death, but harmless sure ain't one of them.
John melts back into the masses, becoming just another face in the crowd. His boys have things under control. They don't need him anymore. He's done all he can for them.
John Winchester turns and walks down the road alone.

Date: 2006-10-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(Plus I can see John being all noble like that, leaving the boys so they'll be safe. I wrote this as if he became corporeal again, but didn't realize until after I posted it that it might be taken another way. It's good, though, as it works well either way. My point remains the same :)

Date: 2006-10-18 01:00 am (UTC)I can't wait to see how the boys continue to deal with the loss of their father and whatever else is eating away at Dean's soul. Hopefully we'll also get to see Sam develop more too. Boy's growing up.
Is it Thursday yet?

Date: 2006-10-18 02:48 am (UTC)that is potentially the loveliest icon I've seen of Sam. Very nice indeed! :D
I'd love to know what Kripke has in mind for them too - particularly the what was whispered in Dean's ear thing. There's only one route that'll piss me off - the Sam is a son of a demon thingie. That would just... be not good. Anything else though? Awesome! :) And yeah, Sam is definitely growing up, but then he's sort of hit that age and life experience time where change happens. :)
And no it isn't dammit! Heh. I would be so entirely and completely consumed with jealousy if there wasn't the wonderful intarwebs. Being stuck in Oz sure does suck sometimes... :)

Date: 2006-10-18 04:23 pm (UTC)As for Sam's character... I don't think that's it. John was many things, but tolerant of evil isn't one of them. He never had any hesitation toward loving Sam, or gave any indication that Sam was any different than Dean in that regard.
I'm not sure if you've seen the extras on the first season DVDs, but Kripke et al. said several times that Sam is Luke Skywalker while Dean is Han Solo. This sparked an idea in me: What if the secret is Sam's potential? Like Luke, Sam may have the potential for either good or evil, and due to his upbringing and his love (for Dean, for people, for himself) will cause him to choose good over the seductive evil? I think that makes the most sense, and Dean’s all woe and stuff because he’s not sure if he’ll be able to keep Sam good, or rather he’s not sure if he’s enough for Sam to hold onto.
You know, it's really too early for meta.

Date: 2006-10-18 10:28 pm (UTC)This is all very true. Hm.. And no *sniff* no DVD extras on my set! Bastards. I can't even get to the purported commentaries. *WOE*
You know, I like the idea of potential good/evil. Brings to mind Meg - she was all possessed, but when we got a glimpse of HER she seemed to want to help, to make things better, so SHE wasn't evil. Hmm.. Poor Dean. Poor Sam. *wails* Poor Papa!
