Talk about Torchwood 2x13, so spoiler warning

Three points:

1. Okay, outside of the character deaths, did Jack seriously spend two thousand YEARS buried alive under Cardiff? Because that's fucking dark, man.

2. This episode restored my wavering Gwen love. She was competent in the face of destruction and kicked ass. Go Gwen. However, I was not impressed with the lack of action!Ianto. Yes, I know they had to focus on BURYING JACK ALIVE FOR 2000 YEARS and giving Tosh and Owen screen time, but it makes me sad. Well, more him next year because...

3. I don't think I've seen a show where they killed off 40% of their main cast and yet still plan to come back for another season. That takes some serious balls. I'm curious as to what happens next year -- will they bring back Martha?

Way to take it to the wall, Torchwood.

I heard a rumor about who they're having come in and even though it's my favourite Doctor Who character I don't know if I'll watch because those were my two favourite TW characters.

Who's your fave character? Martha?

...

They wouldn't bring Rose to Torchwood, would they?

Anyway, they gave Tosh and Owen such a noble way out, although the dying for TEN MINUTES killed me. I don't normally get choked up over TV but this did me in.

Mickey Smith.

They did and that whole scene with them at the end was just ripping me apart because I was so sure they'd get saved and then they didn't.

I love Mickey! And how on earth would they bring Mickey back? No, don't answer that. I've seen too many spoilers as it is.

I have to run this ep all over in my head. I have no idea where they will go from here, because seriously. This is messed up.

Heh I don't know anyways, it's just a rumor I heard like third hand.

God I don't even know how they can move forward. I hate to say it but Gwen was right, how do they go on? I imagine in a very OT3 fashion which will cause more Gwen/Rhys grief. I can't see them pushing each other apart so it'll have to be clinging together.

From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
I think I'm a very bad person, but the OT3 idea does appeal to me. They've all lost so much, and Rhys may empathize but he can't understand (also, half of bloody Cardiff was blown up because of Torchwood -- that's quite a bit of guilt to bear).

Speculation about the series okay here? I don't know how to make an LJ-cut. If it needs one would you please behind a cut for me?

Who do you think they will replace Tosh and Owen with? Do you think that Martha will join Torchwood as Owen's replacement? I don't know who'll they get to fill Tosh's role.

I'd love it if they they recruited PC Andy and Rhys. I'm not sure what roles they could give them. Freelance Reserve members perhaps.

Rhys would be invaluable in clean up, of bodies etc, and transportation manager.

I'd love to have Andy as a recurring character. He could be their Cardiff Police contact.

2 reserve TW characters that no one knows about would definitely avoid putting all of TW's eggs in one basket.

No lj cut needed in comments. If people find themselves here, they're on their own :)

I suspect that we'll see one Dr Who character, to bring in the audience, but not more than that. Martha has the street cred to be in, but we'll see. I don't know if they could bring in Andy or Rhys... Andy's too good at being police liaison, and Rhys... I love him, but he's not quite Torchwood material. Not yet, anyway.

And a whole new character would be great from a tension standpoint, IMO.

This show seriously wrecks me.

Season three

I'd heard two months back that Owen and Tosh were out, Martha was in and that the show was going to be retooled for a standard Doctor Who viewing time and audience.

I was really, really hoping that was wrong. :(

a standard Doctor Who viewing time and audience.

What does that mean?

I'd like to see Martha back, but the show's already slid back from an adult situation so far. I'm not sure I'd like to see it get even less (more?)

Childsafe, maybe, after all Doctor Who is a family show while Torchwood is for adult, full of violence and sex.

Did they ever see Blink? Family of Blood? Those aren't stories for kids! They freaked me out.

All very strange. I hope it doesn't go like that :(

I think it depends on whether the producer want more characters crossover the two shows like Martha and Jack did and responses on those family-version Torchwood. If positive on both count, I think it's very likely to happen.

Frankly, I hope not. TW has more of an X-Files air to it, and when facing the end of the world on a regular basis, how family friendly can they make it?

I guess we have nine months to see, then. *wibbles*

Oh, don't get me wrong, I expect we'll see lots of Andy and Rhys next year, but not as Torchwood staffers :) Rhys in particular has a lot of potential in the show, even if he continues as a "civilian"

Totally hardcore. O_O

I'm not sold with the 2000 years thing. Jack was too sane and with it to have been through that. Being buried alive is something that fucks anyone up, and 2000 years of reviving and dying? It would have to break his mind. The only way I can buy it is that he died, maybe revived a couple of times, and then stayed in some kind of stasis because his body knew the conditions weren't suitable for revival.

As soon as Tosh left a blood trail and ended up in the med bay, I assumed they were going to kill her off, though I was blindsided by the fact they were going to do it all. I figured Owen would get out of it, though. I'm not convinced that they won't bring him back. We never actually saw him die, and I'm just not that lucky. 40% kill rate is WHOA.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens, though, what with needing a couple more cast members. Given the casting for Doctor Who for the end of the series, I'm left wondering if at least one of them will end up moving to Torchwood (aside from Martha, I can see her filling in as the team doctor, at least until they get someone new). I kind of hope not, because I'd like to see some new blood. I note that Spike John is sticking around the area, too, so we'll probably see more of him.

Testify on that buried alive thing. Also, he came back too "in the moment" for 2000 years to have gone by. Hopefully they'll deal with this... but being Torchwood, probably not.

I have mixed feelings about bringing back Owen. At this point, I have no voiceable comments, so I'll leave those by the wayside.

I think new blood would be best -- someone who doesn't have the background, causing tensions... we'll see. Since Dr. Who starts soon (but not soon enough).

Is it next January yet?

Owen died off camera and in just the sort of radiation accident that screams Ascension!, mutant powers!!, and/or radioactive zombie!!! My guess is he'll be back, but not as a regular cast member.

I want to see a Sarah-Jane appearance.

It would be interesting to see Owen back again... although I have mixed feelings about that. Sort of lessens the sacrifice.

I would love to see Sarah-Jane... TW needs someone with real life skills (and a tin dog, but that's beside the point).

In a random finding, I found an interview with the actor who plays Owen and it implied he filmed at least one episode for season 3. So who knows. Martha may come back and I wouldn't mind. If Owen is truely gone, that would be likely as they would need a medical officer.

I have a feeling that when i watch this episode, I am going to cry.

Bad choice! You don't want someone with a literal door in his head.

I'd prefer someone from UNIT.

Also, the Doctor and Rose picked him up in 2012 and presumably set him back at the same time.

Torchwood ripped my heart out, danced the Mexican Hat dance on it, and then shoved it back inside my rib cage... sideways.

And I love them for that... I thought for sure that Rhys would get killed because A) he knows about Torchwood and accepts Gwen's role, B) they are newlyweds, so much angst, and C)that would make room for OT3 love.

I assumed that Owen and Rhys would both sacrifice themselves for the good of Cardiff. I was blown away by the way things played out. Once Tosh pulled out the Epi-pen, I knew that she'd bleed out before the others arrived. The scenes with Grey and Jack were just so raw, and I kept marveling at the resemblance between the actors. Very well played.

As for next season, I think it would be cool if there was a revolving door for a little while so that they could interview candidates to fill their vacant positions. You could pull in some Who alumni (like Dr. Grace Halloway from the 8th Doctor movie) for a six-week period while Martha screens potential employees, since she'd have to return to UNIT eventually. I would love to see Lalla Ward come in for a guest appearance, but this is not likely. (First of all, her character Romana would have regenerated by now, if she survived the destruction of Gallifrey. Secondly, Lalla retired from acting long ago and is quite happy with her life at present.)IF she decided to get involved, though, the Time Lady's knowledge would prove invaluable to the team before a more permanent replacement is found.

As for other previous Companions, Ace would be a great asset for Torchwood during a fight. She's fought The Master, Daleks, Cybermen, and Sontarans among others. Plus, she's talented in explosives and combat. Which is why I think Sophie Aldred should be brought in for a guest shot. She still does conventions and has been involved in DW radio plays. Plus, she's hot for a 45yr old.

Dalek: Small human female sighted at...
Ace: Who are you calling small?
[Ace begins to destroy it with her baseball bat]
Dalek: Under attack! Under attack! Reinforcements requested!

PS: Lalla Ward continues to do voice-acting for the Big Finish audio plays as Romana, though. There is the slim chance that she might decide to pop onto one of the shows.

Somehow, I managed to hold it together in that last part, but then I read some reactions and episode quotes, and boy did the flood gates open.:( I agree, it's a huge bold move for a tv show to make ~ at most, one major character will get killed, but TWO? (And those two in particular?) I'm glad I managed to avoid spoilers for it though, because that definitely would have lessened the impact.

Also, the only theory I can come up with for why Jack isn't totally insane after nearly 2000 years buried alive is kinda similar to something already said ~ maybe, he revived the few times there was enough air to do so, but once that ran out, he effectively stayed dead until the conditions were right for him to do so. Plus, his clothes were looking good after all those years... :D

Just finished watching the episode and much tears were shed. Now I'm wondering if the BSG season 4 opener is going to have me in tears... I don't think I'm up for that!

I really hope they don't bring in Martha. I like Martha, for the most part. But I really want TW to stand on its own and continually bringing in DW characters isn't going to do that. [personal profile] tanarian had some very good suggestions that I would like to see happen, such as PC Andy (though the actor has been cast in the remake of Bewitched pilot so who knows about his availability). I would like to see Ianto move out from the shadows as he started to do this season. I would like them to actually address the fact that he has now seen the utter destruction of his work place - twice in two years! Remember, he is one of 27 survivors from Canary Wharf and now this? Especially two people he actually knows and likes?

It would be cool if they snagged Marc Warren into playing Elton again. I think that character had a lot of scope, especially if he got work in Torchwood.
