Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] strangevisitor7

Post the first lines from your last 20 stories and look for patterns. I'm including WIPs because otherwise we'd be here for days.

20 First Lines

Patterns: I tend to start some (most?) stories with a short sentence of sentence fragment to snap at the readers' attention, or a straightforward sentence to lay out the feel of the story. The rest of the time, I write long convoluted sentences to indicate that we're going on a bit of a ride.

I don't use first person POV anymore, and if I ever get done Inevitable I never will again. The level of distance with third person limited POV is much more interesting to me at this point.

I like to jump into the action, off the bat, and usually get the POV character's name in so we know who's who in the zoo.

I'm starting to use more present tense writing, which is okay for a short piece but oh my god if I ever write a 50,000+ story in first person POV again please slap me.

K, that's all the patterns I see. Do you see any patterns?

1. The first hint Ziva has that things are going to get much worse, very quickly, is the ding of the elevators and the emergence of Mossad Officer Michael Bashan into the NCIS office. (Agent Afloat Atlantis, SGA/NCIS)

2. When he tells General O'Neill that he'll think about, it's the closest thing he's every come to saying no. (The end to the beginning to the end, SGA)

3. Tony hates snow. (Work and No Play, NCIS/The Shining)

4. The dark-haired woman didn't say much about why Jeanne was not on the short-list for medical examiner internship at the Jeffersonian.( Papa was a rodeo (Mama was a rock n' roll band), NCIS multi-crossover)

5. His first drill sergeant is a total bastard, but he's ten times the man that Jethro's father was. (Talking Hands, NCIS)

6. Tony tossed another box of paperclips into the packing box on his desk. (Life in a Box, NCIS/SGA)

7. Thursday morning. (Caf-Pow Assault, NCIS)

8. I was angry at Richard. (Inevitable, HP/Anita Blake)

9. Jarod stared at the morgue attendant. (Pretender to the Throne, Torchwood/Pretender)

10. "What do you mean, you're not my father?" (Physics of the Spin, SGA/SG1/Gilmore Girls)

11. "It'll be easy," Jack promised. (Jack and Sarah Jane Down the Lane, Torchwood/Sarah Jane Adventure)

12. It hurt. (Dawning Light, BtVS/AB)

13. She had failed. (Nightingale, Alone, Doctor Who)

14. The Doctor sat on the edge of the broken-down post fence, enjoying an apple plucked from a tree somewhere along the meandering path by the river. (Doctor and the Dead, Doctor Who/AB)

15. Years of living in a war zone (for that is what Anita's life is now) hypes her senses the moment anyone new walks into a room; skimming the malls is near on impossible now; too many people, too many invisible threats and she's halfway to jumping out of her skin the moment she walks into a supermarket. (Close your eyes and jump for the skies, an Inevitable short, HP/AB)

16. Vacations, Jack thought in disgust. (Ghost Story, Torchwood/BtVS)

17. Ianto saw more about Torchwood than anyone would give him credit. (Fixing Things, Torchwood)

18. Dawn sat across the table from the little girl, wondering if she was signing a deal with the devil. (Seeking Arcana, BtVS/Torchwood)

19. He can't stay away. (Little Girl, Delicate In Her Ribbons, Torchwood)

20. Jack shoved his hands into his coat pockets. (Shades of Grey, AB/Torchwood)

Also, in other news, I made a playlist of my September bus playlist. 14 songs I listen to on the bus that will get me through the post-Labour-Day crush. Some of the songs had swear words so not safe for the kids.

wow, your music sounds full on :D
I like good Aussie pub rock myself. Barnesy, Acca Dacca (AC/DC) The Angels. Plenty of daggy eighties stuff.

Is #2 new? Or did I miss when you posted it here? It's really awesome and it explains so much about Sheppard.

It's not new, I posted it on Aug 5 (http://mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com/305947.html) but it got lost in the shuffle. It was one of those crazy ideas that came to me and I had to write it. I think I was re-watching SGA "Rising" at the time and was all like, John Sheppard is a WEIRD character."
