The end to the beginning to the end
A Stargate Atlantis story

Summary: John Sheppard has always known how this was going to end.
Rating: G
Disclaimer: Sony and MGM own all things Stargate Atlantis. I but borrow.
Spoilers: Brief mention of the littlest SGA member from season 5, set all over the SGA universe. No future spoilers.
Word count:: 330
Warning: Future character death, time bending, ow my brain.
Note: Um, I dunno. I'm rewatching Rising and it just occurred to me. Not sure where all this writing is coming from but okay.

~~~
When he tells General O'Neill that he'll think about, it's the closest thing he's every come to saying no.
For, you see, John Sheppard knows how this is going to end.
~~~

There's all that Merlin crap about being able to see into the future because of a life lived backwards. Whenever John thinks about such things, all he does is nod, because how can anyone possibly not deal with knowing how everything's going to end?

He tries to tell McKay about this once, seven years after they arrived in Atlantis, but the man ignores him while yelling at Torrin to get out of the power coils your mother is going to kill me! but John knows the boy will be fine and he just leaves McKay to the mess.

That's what the Ancient gene has done to him.

After all, everyone forgets that Merlin was an Ancient.

~~~
That's why he keeps on making the decisions he does. To another, it might look as if he's going off half-cocked, but what's the point in gathering data when you know how it's all going to turn out?
Whenever he hears about those alternate universes, he doesn't really care. It's not his world, not his path. He knows how this one's going to end up, and that's all he needs.
Maybe that makes him cold. He doesn't worry about that, though. He found finds the world buried in ice and so there's no point in worrying about it.
~~~

They declassify the Stargate program and they kill Michael and they lose Ronon in battle and McKay knocks up Keller and that's just how it goes.

Knowing doesn't make the losses any easier.

~~~
He knows he ends up alone.
Well, him and Atlantis, together until the end of time.
There are worse places to be.
~~~

When he walks through the wormhole for the first time, John Sheppard may look all wide-eyed and amazed, but inside, he just blinks and walks forward.

Atlantis is there to welcome him home.

end

Writing this hurt my brain. Unlike the Sheppard I put in the story, thinking of time twisting makes me queasy. And yet. I confuse myself sometimes.

this is rather painful. I love how in such few words you manage to convey so much.

Yeah, there's something rather... irresistable, about torturing Sheppard. Rewatching season one does that to a girl :)

yeah... I guess they decided to give the military leader the Daniel model: i.e. as much angst, heartbreak and pain as possible.

Well, he's the easiest one to hurt. McKay's too much of a complainer so hurting him is usually full of woe (plus on a nicer note, McKay has to get them all out of there safe, a role that fell to Sam in SG1). Teyla's the girl, and no matter what anyone says, no one likes to see the girl get hurt. Ronon is usually the one to pound down the doors, and all that leaves is Lorne, who has the American square jaw of justice and is contractually incapable of being hurt (except when paired with McKay and then all bets are off)

And look at me ramble :O

Wow. I wish you were a fan of John and Elizabeth because you make the most beautiful fanfiction.

I am a fan of John and Elizabeth, but part of the problem is that I didn't really get into that pairing until literally two episodes before Torri left the show. Sigh. I miss her. She was total awesome sauce.

And thank you for your kind words :)

This is great but... *sniffles*

Yeah, it's not exactly a nice piece of fiction. But in the end, it's got that melancholy happiness to it.

I'm just rambling now :~

Thank you :) Yes, it's not a happy ending, but does anyone ever really get one of those?

In other news: Is that Joe Flannigan flailing in his sleep, in your icon?

No... not really. But then, life wouldn't really be all that interesting if everything was all sunshine and roses.

Uh huh... well... more Shep actually... it's from... Midway I think and made by [livejournal.com profile] crysothemis.

Painful. If there's a curse stating 'may your life be interesting', then there definitely is/should be one stating 'may you know your path/future'. Brrr.....

Exactly. When I first read whatever Merlin book it was with such an idea, I was weirded out. Kind of calls that whole concept of free will into question... And yet, here i am, ficcing it.

I do what I can. Now, all I need to do is to get around to watching the parts of season 4 I avoided. To the internetz!

Yeah, I was in a weird mood yesterday. Not sure what's up with this stuff. Normally I can't stand to read time bendiness like this. And yet I write it.

Hey, I'm writing Hellboy fic. The world is strange, and what inspires in a given moment is stranger.

I am going to read your Ziva crossover fic, I just haven't been in the right headspace for Ziva fic right at the moment, and I want to fully appreciate it.

(I am perfectly in the right headspace for timebendy weirdness and angsty metaphysics.)

John is made of awesome. He needs all sorts of mad props (luckily, the writers agree :)

So is John Merlin, or is he just referencing Merlin?

I liked it :)

I was intending that John was just referencing Merlin. In that "we're all screwed here" sort of way :)

Very, very cool. It does seem so Sheppard, doesn't it? To see life in backwards.

Sheppard certainly does approach life in an interesting manner :) Put him together with McKay and you have all kinds of lovely dysfunction.
