2009 Fic in Review (all fics are linked at the bottom of the post)

2009, aka the year of the Sheppard.

Fic installments written (for WIP chapters and stand-alones): 20

Total word count: 92,430

Pairing Stats: The only real pairings I've written this year include John Sheppard in some form or another: John Sheppard/Helen Magnus, John Sheppard/Rory Gilmore, and John-Joan Sheppard/Rodney McKay.

My favorite story this year: Rosemary for Remembrance. It's just such an interesting take on an ambiguous character(Sheppard), and everything pulled together very well. Also full of good Rodney characterizations, which is always fun. In the background of that story are a set of fully developed characters that I will probably never use, but I can tell you everything about Rosemary and Joseph Sheppard. Best sort of background characters, the ones with real background.

My best story this year: Rosemary for Remembrance. It just works.

Story most tragically underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I don't know... nothing really stands out this year.

Most fun story: Physics of the Spin. It has so much happening in it, and it's all in my head and somehow I still haven’t exploded. Writing Rodney and Rory together is fun, as is her journey in Pegasus.

Most sexy story: I don’t really do sexy... the one that qualifies would be in Razor’s Edge in which John Sheppard continually tries to seduce Helen Magnus over 15 years, until it finally works after yet another brush with death.

Story with the single sexiest moment: The John/Rory scene in chapter 20 (Pegasus Law of Disaster) in which Rory almost died and ends up in John's room and things get... reactionary.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for me" story: Playing Softly on the Radio and Razor's Edge, in which I kill off John Sheppard's mother in horrible ways.

Most unintentionally telling story: Not sure I have one... other than the many ways in which I kill of John Sheppard's mother, but not even that.

Story that shifted my own perception of the characters: Writing Keeper of the Dead took a lot of looking at Elizabeth as she developed over the years, and that was very interesting. Also, in everything that I write with John Sheppard, there's that underlying idea that He left Elizabeth behind, which is contrary to every single action he's taken in years. He went after Sumner, he went after Ford, he goes back for his team and his people every single time, and yet he left Elizabeth behind in the Replicator city because it was the only thing he could do. He sacrificed her for everyone on Atlantis, and that has to matter.

Hardest story to write: I haven't posted on it in 2009, but Inevitable. It's a true sense of writer's block because I simply no longer care about the Anita Blake characters as they are being written. It's very hard to write about characters like that, but I am trying :)

Easiest story to write: The John/Joan Sheppard babyfic. Once I wrote Rosemary for Remembrance, the character of Joan Sheppard and all her associated angst sprung full-formed into my head. Plus I like non-saccharine baby-fic (Mockingbirds and Diamond Rings springs to mind). Or maybe that's pregnancy!fic.

Story I'd like to revise (but probably won't): Again, not posted to in 2009, but Inevitable. In an ideal world I'd go back and chop about 1/3 of the prose, tighten up the story and plotting, and stop writing Anita as First-Person-POV. Unfortunately, the story got away from me over the years, and it was my first real big story as a fanfic writer. Looking back, I could really improve it. But I have a bad habit of not being able to go back, only forward.

Story I wish I'd finished: Inevitable. But I'm working on that. And I really do mean that, not just saying it.

Story I didn't write: AKA the plot bunny section: Things that entered my head this year and didn't get written up, and are unsurprisingly all Stargate-based.

Pathologist and the Pilot (Bones/SG1): Cam Saroyan, pathologist, and Cam Mitchell, USAF pilot, have a wacky mix-up one night in a restaurant, when they both stand up for the same table reservation. They have dinner, and they date (everyone, especially Michelle, is v. happy that Dr. Cam has a new hobby). It's all nice and going places, and then there's this strange body at the Jeffersonian and a space bounty hunter out for Col. Cam (again - the man can't catch a break) and SG1 drops in to help Col. Cam solve the problem, which as usual only makes things worse. Protective! Booth, suspicious!Hodgins, pickpocketing!Vala, stoic!Teal'c.

General Lab Help (Bones/SG1): Clone!Jack gets a summer job as Dr. Temperance Brennan's administrative assistant at the Jeffersonian. They have Egyptian stuff there, including some "fairly mysterious jars". Goa'uld wackiness ensues.

Atlantis and the Antichrist (Supernatural/SGA): Jesse, the "antichrist" kid from that episode in season 5 of SPN, goes to Australia to try out the surfing (it was implied at the end of that episode when he vanished to save his family). John Sheppard, newly promoted to Colonel, is on a quick vacation in Australia before Atlantis uses the wormhole drive to head back to Pegasus. Turns out that "demon-born child" looks a lot like "half-ascended child" to the Atlanteans. Also that John Sheppard's the only one immune to Jesse's wishes, due in no small part to the fact that his mother was possessed by a certain tie-wearing angel before John was conceived. Yes, you read that right. John Sheppard as Christ figure. Anyway, after wackiness in Pegasus, Jesse and John end up back in the middle of the apocalypse and send Lucifer back to hell. With bonus ascended! Elizabeth and the following exchange:

McKAY: I thought the Ancients weren't supposed to interfere--
SHEPPARD: Leave it alone, McKay.
McKAY: --in your pants.
SHEPPARD: *DIAF deathglare*

Gilmores! in! Space! (Gilmore Girls/Stargate, not a Physics of the Spin AU): You know how Rory Gilmore went sorta pod-person in season 4 of GG? Trust me, she did. Season One Rory is more mature that season Six Rory. So my idea was, how about if Rory was one of the people Loki abducted back in his people-snatching days? (Yes, like Clone!Jack in Fragile Balance.) Only instead of sending Rory 1.0 back, Loki left the clone there and Rory 1.0 somehow got lose into the universe, trying for years to get back to earth, meeting Goa'uld and Jaffa and other folks, until a chance meeting with SG1 gets her a ticket home. Hey, it's a better explanation than a lot of what happened in the later seasons of GG.

Fracture (A Joan Sheppard SGA remix): set after Rosemary for Remembrance, but not including the world with the baby. Instead of going down that path, it's the aftermath of Joan Sheppard exploding a nuclear bomb in a Wraith ship near Earth's orbit, and the IOA finally deciding that she's more trouble than she's worth on Atlantis. I'm being a little vague with this one, because I am working on it a little still and may publish it this year, but it's pretty dark and deals more with the gender issues in the military, Ancient interference issues, and what happens when a person like Sheppard has nothing left to lose.

"I'm being a little vague with this one, because I am working on it a little still and may publish it this year"

1 - this is exciting to me. <3 Rosemary for Rememberance
2 - this also makes me sad because if that means what I think it means then it means that we won't be seeing Bones/SG1 anytime soon :( I now have this image of a Hodgins/Teal'c stare down that WON'T GO AWAY

I love all your fic but General Lab Help just sounds like it would be amazing.

All of your plot bunnies sound fascinating, especially Atlantis and the Antichrist, since I am currently trying to find decent SGA/SPN fic to read. And Castiel being John's sort-of dad? Awesome!

And I have seen nothing but one episode of Bones, but your descriptions make me interested in reading Pathologist and the Pilot and General Lab Help.

Being a big PotSs fan, I love the sound of "Gilmores! in! Space!"

Sounds like a lot of fun. It's somewhat evoking Farscape to me: John going from just an astronaut into some combo of Han Solo and Mal Reynolds in just a season - with his gun named Winona. It feels like it would take a similar transformation for a teenage American girl to survive (maybe even thrive?) alone in the galaxy after being abducted by aliens - and that would be a fun change to see.
