Date: 2005-04-12 06:21 am (UTC)I'm sure I've fallen into quite a number of fandoms via good XOs, but given that I read in over 50 fandoms, I really don't remember which ones. I do sometimes read stories in a fandom I'm not (yet) into because someone whose recs I trust pimps it, and if I like one or more of the characters/the setting, I'll investigate the canon and/or rest of the fandom.
I've also sometimes gotten into fandoms just for the fanfic: X-Files, for example. I only read for Mulder/Krycek slash (ok, and the occasional demented rare pairing, like Mulder/Bigfoot *g*). I've watched the episodes with Krycek in them, and a handful of others, but I just read summaries of all other important eps.
HP would be another example: I like the world JKR has created, and I find some of her characters very interesting, but her books mostly bore me. I got into the fandom because I was bored and decided to try a story, and it had Snape in it, and *bam*, new fandom obsession. I read the books simply to be able to follow the fanfic.
Sometimes I follow recs for new stories in fandoms I've stopped reading extensively or at all, and if it's a really good story, it can revive a fandom for me, but usually it just means that the fandom joins the many others that I read on the side, mostly because there's not enough good fic.
