Disclaimer: Laurell K. Hamilton owns all things Anita Blake. J.K. Rowling owns all things Harry Potter. I am but borrowing the characters for a brief time and shall return them intact at the end.
Note: What might have happened if instead of going to Egypt, the Weasleys went to America in the summer between CoS and PoA? Nathaniel is fourteen and on the street.
*~*~*~*
Ginny fumbled with her muggle map, the kind they gave away at the hotel. Looking up, she realized that she was falling behind her family, and she ran to catch up. She didn't want to get lost in Saint Louis. Growing up in Ottery St. Catchpole, she had never dreamed the muggles could make cities so big!
Her mother was busy herding the twins and Ron, and didn't notice that Ginny was lagging behind. She didn't notice when Ginny tried to shove her map into her pocket, or when her muggle jacket gave way, and her wand fell to the ground.
Ginny bit back a cry and fell to her knees, trying to scoop the contents of her pocket up. The muggles couldn't see her wand, they just couldn't!
There was movement in the alley to her left, and Ginny involuntarily looked up. Her fingers froze on her wand.
There was a boy hiding there, looking at her. He was watching her with enormous lavender eyes, his reddish hair falling over his shoulders. Ginny knew he was a boy, even though he didn’t look like the boys Ginny knew. This boy was pretty, not handsome like Harry.
But his eyes... Ginny knew the look in those eyes. She saw the look in her mirror every night when she couldn't sleep. An ancient look. A painful look.
A look Tom had put there.
"What's your name?" the boy whispered.
"Ginny-- Ginevra," she whispered back, spellbound. "Who are you?"
"Nathaniel."
There was a commotion, and Ginny whipped her head around to see her mother barrelling toward her. Mum grabbed her by the arm and yanked her upright. "What are you doing?" her mother almost shrieked. "Put that away!"
Mum quickly shoved all of Ginny's stuff into her oversized bag. "I was just--"
"You can't run off!" her mum scolded.
"But mum..." Ginny looked back down the alley, and didn't see Nathaniel at first. As mum dragged her away, Ginny caught Nathaniel peeking out at her from behind a garbage bin.
She wondered what made him so old inside.
