~~*~~

Jason heard the screams even as he ran down the Hogwarts corridor. His senses in his man-wolf form were working overtime. Everything was blood and screaming and the rank bitter taste of dark magic. He didn't know where Harry and Anita were, didn't know anything except that somewhere down the stone corridor, not nearly far enough away from the battle, a girl screamed.

Jason put on a final burst of speed and tore around the corner. He dropped to his hands to catch his momentum, and it slowed him just enough that he could take in the entire scene before him. A huge man, werewolf in human form, flew back against the stone wall on one side of the corridor. On the other side of the corridor, on her side, with her robes ripped all the way up to her waist and her wand pointed at the werewolf, lay Luna.

A hot protective fury swept away any other thought in Jason's head. Luna was Harry's, and Harry was Jason's pack, so Luna was Jason's pack. That bastard was trying to hurt his pack.

The werewolf was on his feet again and diving for Luna. Jason bunched his powerful legs beneath him and leapt for the werewolf, but he was too far away. The werewolf grabbed Luna and threw her down the corridor like a rag doll before Jason landed on his back.

The werewolf went down under Jason's weight, but managed to turn and heave Jason off of him. Jason twisted midair and landed on his feet, ready for another attack. As soon as he had the traction, he leaped again.

This time, the werewolf met him standing. The other man's hands had shifted, and as they slashed at each other, he shifted until he was also in man-wolf form.

It was hopeless, the human part of Jason's mind knew. The other werewolf had the reach of him, longer arms and claws, and he was as much an alpha as Richard was, so much more powerful.

But that didn't matter as Jason lunged, teeth bared. Even if he died, he'd die protecting his pack. It was enough.

The werewolf dropped to his knees, his claws slashing down toward Jason's exposed gut. He would be too late, too slow, but Jason tried to move to shield himself and still get in a killing blow.

Luna screamed again. The werewolf jerked as if electrocuted, then dropped to the ground. Jason didn't wonder why, or how. He followed the werewolf down and in a swift movement, ripped the wolf's throat out.

Pulling back, Jason spat out his mouthful of fur and bloody flesh. If it had been any other enemy of the pack, Jason would have devoured him, bones and all, but the man tasted bitter and foul, like evil.

There was a movement in the hall, and Jason swung around on all fours, ready for any foe. But it wasn't an enemy that had moved.

Luna was on her feet, one hand bracing herself on the wall and the other holding her wand at the werewolves Jason kept very still. It must have been Luna who stopped the other wolf, Jason thought, giving him the chance to kill.

But she kept her wand up and pointed at him. Jason wasn't sure he blamed her, after what happened. But would she do the same to him? Did she even know it was him? She'd only seen him in human form.

"J-Jason?" Luna asked.

He nodded slowly. "It's me, Luna."

Her hand trembled, but her gaze was steady as she looked at him. "You're the only one I hadn't seen," she said. "I know what Professor Lupin's wolf looks like, and then--"

Her voice broke off as her gaze dropped to the dead werewolf at Jason's feet. There was something broken in her eyes, but also an anger so complete, Jason was surprised. He had known she had heart, but he didn't think she was so strong.

"Move," she ordered, and Jason hastily complied. He carefully padded down the corridor toward her, not making any sudden moves, but she wasn't paying him any attention. When Jason was firmly out of the way, she spoke in a clear, angry voice, "Incindiare."

The werewolf corpse burst into white-hot flames, making Jason yelp in surprise. Seconds later, the fire consumed the entire body, leaving only ash on the carpet.

Luna lowered her wand and looked at Jason. The wavering in her hand extended to her eyes, but she said, "More came with him, I don't know where they went."

Jason cocked his head, listening. "There's a fight, down there," he said, pointing down the hall toward the stairs.

"What are you going to do?" Luna demanded.

The screams Jason heard were children's screams, children much younger than Luna. "I'm going down there."

Luna clenched her jaw and raised her chin a little. "Then I'm going with you."

Jason hesitated. He wanted to tell her to hide, but he knew she wouldn't listen. So much like Anita, he thought, and so he would treat her like Anita. "Come on, then. They need our help."

Go, Luna! I always wanted to see her kick some ass. In her case, the spaciness is also her strength that sees her through. And I love Jason's reactions to her. (I wonder who's PdSing for Jean-Claude, though -- or is he somewhere nearby?)

Thanks! After the OotP battle, I always thought Luna's kick-ass-edness was understated.

As for JC... we'll learn all that in ninty-zillion chapters. Can't give away the ending, can we? :D

Very interesting choice of characters. Neither get the recognition they rightfully deserve imo. I enjoyed the interaction. Well done. :)

As always, I think you've captured the characters dead-on. Luna doesn't get enough stage time but it's pretty clear she's a lot stronger than most people imagine. And Jason, well, he's grown up a lot in the books, so this isn't a surprising reaction for him. He just doesn't realize how much of an adult he's become!

Luna's strength is hidden behind that ecentric teenage layer. I think Harry was starting to see that, in teh last two books, but most others underestimate her. Just like a lot of people underestimate Jason, and what he's capable of.

Yup. At the start of OoP, Harry's worried about sitting next to her on the train; during HBP, on the train, Harry makes it quite clear that anyone who fucks with Luna will answer to him -- and Ron and Hermione back him up on this.

Well, she was there in the Ministry, and she believed Harry when no one else would (in a barmy way, but still). That counts for a lot with our boy.

Guh. I have shivers. That was a great fight scene and Luna was wonderful. Strength underneath it all. Wonderful.

The scene actually came to me late last night while I was out for my evening constitutional, and I had to rush home and write it. It gave me chills, too. I wonder about my brain sometimes.

I really liked your portrayal of Luna and the interaction between the two.

If I was going to ship our boy Harry with anyone, Luna would be at the top of the list. Definitely over Ginny.

I'm glad you like Luna. I really enjoy her character, and what I've seen of her makes me glad JKR added her into OotP.

Luna will not be ignored in upcoming IN chapters, never fear :)
