I'm in an odd and twitchy mood this morning, and I'm also at a loss as to how to write the remaining 95 Dawn ficlettes for [livejournal.com profile] tth100. So, as I love to abuse the poll option on my paid account, I will ask you:

[Poll #600989]

Other = Charlain Harris' Sothern Vampire Novel series. She writes a different kind of Vampire novel, though strikingly similar to Anita Blake in that the vampires are legal and the humor could give a reader a heart attack. But CH's unique spin is the Japaneese invention of synthetic blood that unwittingly led to the revealing and legalization of vampires. The stories revolve around the happenings of rural Loisianna waitress, Sookie Stackhouse, and they have my full reccomendation.

I've read most of those, actually. I'd have to give it some thought, but I might be able to do it.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I don't know how you'd do it...Maybe Anita asks why some Sothern Vampire called Jean-Claude the 'King' of St. Louis and Anita finds out a bit more about the Vampire culture? Or something else...Anita is asked to train a new Vampire Executioner for the Sothern Region?...er, maybe not. Anita gets to talk to someone whose love life is just as wierd as her own?...oooh, I wanna see that conversation...couldja? wouldja?

Wait a minute...this is supposed to be about Dawn, not another challenge...shucks. So cross that suggestion out, unless you can fit Dawn into it(you've got ninty-five others to write)...Maybe a Women's Seminar on how to mannage your love lives and those pesky men. Everyone else just brings their husbands or boyfriends, singular or double, but two women come in trailing a bevy of beaus, and Dawn is intensely curious?

Well, I have got about 45 Anita-centric ones to go for fanfic100. And I am allowed a total of 10 crossovers, and only have 3 so far. We'll see how it goes :)

*is bad and never comments*

Harry Potter / BtVS is, quite frankly, overdone, and while I trust you to find new and interesting plots and situations, that's really not the kind of setting I'd rather see Dawn evolve in. Too many bad Dawn-sues, maybe.

Besides Anita Blake crossovers are so interesting. *__* And Highlander ones could be awesome.

I thoroughly enjoyed your last Anita Blake / Firefly, even though I don't know firefly at all, and I wonder what your take on Jarod would be. I'm afraid I don't know enough about the other fandoms to say anything.

As for the pairings crossovers question -- well. I'm not saying that I don't want to see cross-fandom pairings, because when the chemistry happens, it happens and that's cool. But frankly, for me, the point of a crossover is mostly to see how the two universes and their characters interact and evolve, and what makes a crossover for me is the way the two worlds/sets of people get integrated. If the integration involves romance, great! that can be cute, and so long as it's IC it's all good.

When there's more attention given to the characters' romance than there is to the settings and overall plot, when the whole point of the fic is to make two characters from different fandoms fall in love, that sounds to me a bit too much like wish fulfilment and not like a solid story.

When it's in one fandom, fics that pair people off bother me less, because I've usually seen them interact, they already have a common history; the romance fic is then something that explores a side of their relationship, basing itself on something that already existed. When it's in a crossover, it sounds a lot more random -- oh, so and so are both cute and I like them, so i'm going to hint at a whole reason why they would even be in the same universe and then stick them together. There would need to be lots and lots of backstory to lessen the "pairing drawn out of a hat" feeling.

... uh. yeah. To conclude, I don't mind pairings crossovers if they're more than just a PWP -- if they have a setting and plot and it's IC for them to act like that. But I prefer stories where the romance is not the only goal.

*goes back into lurk mode*

Come On! HP/BtVS is only trite because so many of them are so very, very poorly written and cannot be stomached for more than a few chapters. But when Mhalachai writes HP/BtVS, which she has before dramatic, beautiful, humorous drabbles, she makes the topic explode with Character Insight, Character Development, Character Dramatics, Character Conflict, Plot Conflict, Character Cuteness and All-Around Character Wonderful Yummy Goodness. These things you should know, dear lurker. Mhalachai, when the inspiration hits, can write anything. Mhalachai's Pen is Mighty indeed.

HP/BtVS might be good in her hands, but she probably wouldn't be asking for opinions if she had The Plot already, and if she's still looking for a world in which to let the plotbunnies breed, I'd rather see more Anita Blake.

(of course she could write Dragon Ball Z meets Sailor Moon and i'd read it, so...)

You're right, actually. My brain re Harry Potter is all on Inevitable right now, and trying to put Dawn in the middle of all that is insane.

PS: I have much lurve for your icon.

Or the man on the moon meets aquaman, etc. You are extremely correct. Just saying that all those things you qualified are qualities Mhalachai's writing already possesses.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I just noticed that I'd reiterated part of what you'd already written. This is what happens when I read to fast.

Agreed, in every particular. She's a better writer, in my opinion, than Laurell K. Hamilton.

I agree about the awesomeness of the Anita Blake crossovers. Which, I'm sure, will come as no surprise.

I think I'll be working on the Highlander/BtVS Dawn and Methos stories as my main thread in the tth100, with the rest sort of randoms. Maybe a few more on the Asher/Dawn line... mostly all ansgty. Because writing Asher without angst is sort of like a day without sunshine.

I haven't written Pretender in a while, and I think I should. THe character of Jared is really easy to insert into a short situation, as that's basically his whole thing.

I agree with you about a relationship between crossover characters needing a long and realistic buildup. I don't think I can actually *write* PWP.

Thanks for commenting :)

Wait! Wait! Wait! I just thought of another Other!

Other = The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...The infamous trillogy in five parts! Maybe get some Melvin angst on the cooker and then toss in a whole Dawn, let simmer for an Improbable ammount of time, and Voila! You have Sauce a la Delectibile.

Just to let you know, I have a really hard time putting crossovers in a universe far, far way. That's why I left Star Trek, Star Wars and LotR off the above list. (The Firefly/AB crossover didn't count. I made that work :) I'll see what I can do.

Heh! How about putting Hannibal Lecter in the AB universe? (And have Federal marshal Anita Blake meet Special Agent Clarice Starling?)

I see...But, if you think about the nature of the Probability machine/ flying thing...It could so easily happen that *pop*, whoopsie, that flying spaceship winds up on Earth, pre-demolishment...and look! There's Dawn. Then you could perhaps have an entry into the Guide on Vampires on how they're an old backwards planet's myth, but quite obviously the Guide needed an update...

Wait-a-minute...Arthur asks how the Guide got it's entry on Vampires and Slayers, and how come they aren't concidered a myth by superior intelligences...

Or, 'the Hitch-hiking wasn't the first strange thing to happen Arthur in his life, previously he had a life-threatening encounter with a strange girl...Her name was Dawn, and like her name, she was gone in a flash.'

Actually, I don't know much about The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just read the books seven years ago, watched the movie, and can't remember much of either. So it doesn't really matter, at all. Just thought it was an interesting idea...for an esosteric crossover. Much potential for humor.

But I can see how that could be a problem...concidering the galaxy far, far away element. *hee!* I'm a little spiked on coffee and chocolate and a performance well done...sorry about all the words.

You're subtle :P

Also, Dawn at Buffy's wedding? Is this a cry for more Candlelight, or is my imagination running away with me?

I hadn't thought of it, but there's no way I'd turn down more Candlelight. Ever. I love that fic. As much as I love Inevitable (and all your others), it was Candlelight that I started reading first, so it'll always be my favorite. :)

How's your weekend going?

How about you?

Ghostbuster, Hellraiser, Interview with a Vampire, Shaun of the Dead, or Friday the 13th. Sorry, got caught up in all the Halloween movies on TV this weekend.

Ah, Halloween movies :) I'm going to avoid walking down the Anne Rice fanfic trail of WOE, myself. But Dawn and the Ghostbusters... might work.

And of course, there's always the Father of All Fanfiction, the Sherlock Holmes Universe. The very first fan fictions -- or as they're known in the Holmesian fandom, pastiches -- were written in order to satisfy the public's and fans' desire for more Holmes and Watson.

I'd like to see more Kindred fics (or ficbits) out there. There are far too few, IMHO. Also, did someone mention Dawn at Buffy's wedding in the Candlelight 'verse? ::hint hint:: ;)

Considering my current Firefly obsession, I'd love to see you write lots and lots of Firefly crossovers... enspecially if they involve Jayne. *makes puppy eyes*

I forgot to click the "other" button, but if you need more suggestions: Have you seen The 10th Kingdom? Or how about Star Trek or the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett? I'll even suggest Star Wars, just to give you lots of options.

Have fun! :~)

From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
Actually, I've been thinking about expanding on Dance (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mhalachaiswords/109568.html), so the Jayne potential is not too far out there.

Haven't seen 10th Kingdom, or Discworld. Star Trek and Star Wars crossovers I have a bit if trouble with, in actually getting Dawn there in the first place in a plausible way. I'll see what I can do, but it's just easier on my poor brain to not go there, if you know what I mean.

A CSI Crossover Would Be Cool!

This prompt is a little late, but I haven't been on LJ much over the past months but I thought of a prompt if you are still interested:

The Colour of Red: Lips, Blood, Emotion, Nature.

P.S. Another Sub-Prompt: Lotion (now that one would be interesting to read!)

P.S.S. Another Mini-Sub-Prompt: A Spork, A Chopstick, and A Lock To Pick....

Done. Hope this isn't to late.
