Anyway, today's fic is a drabble for
firefly100. And it's River-centric, b/c I <3 River.
Title: Just Breathe
Character: River
Word Count: 100
Rating: PG for content
Note: Set any time mid-season. River thinks about what the Academy did to her. Joss is Boss etc.
~~*~~
In.
Life needs air. Without air, everything stops.
Out.
In.
They gave her too much air, made her scream and beg before they took it away and made spots dance in her eyes and her lungs burn to cinders.
Out.
Now she was in a metal box in space, with tin air and loud voices and no one knew what they did to her.
In.
She knew, in her head and in her fingernails and in her vertebrae.
Out.
She didn't want to know any more.
Stop.
Spots danced in her eyes, lungs burned.
She wouldn't let them win.

Death and River were having one of their periodic chats. Not the Big Death, mind you. Though this Death was big enough.
River and the Big Death had been on speaking terms well before the Academy got hold of her; this may have been what kept their programming from being a total success. But this particular Death, the one to whom she was currently talking, she'd only met recently.
"I like your reflexes," he'd told her, his short blond hair gleaming like the legendary wheat fields of Earth-That-Was.
"I like your cleanliness," she'd replied. He'd raised an eyebrow at that, so she elaborated:
"I'm tangled, you're straight. You go one, then other, then back, no worries, just smooth. Always smooth."
"'Smooth'. And you want to be smooth?" asked the man who was born Ted Forrester, several centuries ago back on Earth-That-Was.
"I want to be whole," River replied.
