How many people here read the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire books by Charlaine Harris?

[Poll #791754]

Also, anyone know of any good SV fanatics or fanfic sites?

Thanks/love

Mhalachai

PS: I can't spell-check worth a dam.

If I read the series I might be able to understand it more but, I'll probably read it anyways and then pick up the books. LOL

I really recommend the series. It's light, fun, and full of vampire politics. And Sookie's not that annoying, which is nice.

Plus OMG teh plotz!!!

Depends how much of that canon you'd need to know in order for it to make sense, as I don't read them. On the other hand, if you write the backs of cerial boxes, I'd read them, so ..

I'm actually taking care to tell my readers all they need to know, as part of the narrative. I may have to ask your opinion in a few days, to see if I'm being too heavy with the exposition.

I'm also worried that writing Sookie from the first person POV may make her sound too much like Anita. Oh well. I worry too much, it's a thing.

I haven't read them yet, but have heard some good things. If you wrote something, then I know I would have to start reading them too so that I would get more out of the stories. A crossover with Anita, well, I'm there, always.

I like them a lot, especially the later books. The plot in the last few has started more into the vamp politics and stuff, which I really enjoy. Plus they're an easy read (ie not too long, and they flow well)

I read the first few but I didn't really like them. I don't think they're that funny or well written. My sister is crazy about them but I just don't see the appeal myself. That's just my opinion though. Don't let that stop you. I bet a bunch of your other readers would enjoy it even if I wouldn't.

The first three books were so-so, in my opinion, but the latest two just rocked. She's hit her stride, and it took those books to get me interested in actually buying the series.

Haven't read them, so it'd depend on how much I'd need to know - I mean, I'd still read your story, but it would also be a crash course in Sookie canon for me. On the other hand, I read 'Different Eyes' without knowing anything about Firefly, and look where I am now...

If a plot bunny is biting, I say go for it.

I am putting the required SV backstory in the narrative, in a way I hope isn't dull. It's a writing challenge to be able to do this, which is nice.

And I love that you're so into FF. FF rocks the world.

SV fanfic sites??

Well are you interested in gen/het or slash fics?

The main SV slash archive is here:
http://smallville.slashdom.net/

They have a 'sister' site called Level 3 which houses both gen & slash:
http://www.smallvillefanfic.com/

There's an LJ community sv_inquiry for finding fics, look thru their 'memories':
http://community.livejournal.com/sv_inquiry/profile

This site does fic recs (all fandoms) & they rec both gen/het & slash fics & is very well organized: Polyammorous Recommendations
http://bifictionalbedlam.slashcity.net/recs/index.html

Sorry I haven't found an excusivly GEN fic archive yet (slash seems to dominate the fandom). FF.Net seems to have the most gen fic, at least those not housed on an author's 'personal' site.

And here are some specific fic/author recs (should warn you I like *long* reads:

more SV

And by Lanning Cook, also a 'redemptionist' fic.

Identical Series
(10 fics so far & a bunch of 'teaser' snippets for the next one on her LJ)

This is my absolute favorite slash series (don't worry, it's not a 'bump & grind fic. the boys don't even start to get 'physical' until the 5th fic).

Lanning's has found a way to 'redeem' Lex & still have the evil 'Luthor' of comic book canon. And you'll love her OCs (I've got a crush on Eli).

I'd read it, sure. I don't read the books, nothing against them, I just didn't get into them. I'd be more interested in the Anita side of the crossover, but the Sookieverse is pretty interesting all on it's own.

It's Sookie's POV, at least in the section I'm currently writing, but it's a look at the AB characters from the outside. I can't wait to see how Sookie responds to Jean-Claude. Oh, Jean-Claude and his poofy shirts.

The Southern Vampire series is one of the few that I buy in hardcover. It kinda reminds me of a PG-13 version of the Anita Blake series. I'm hoping that the series continues to rely on plot and avoids turning into a sexfest.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a distinct lackage of fanfics for the series. The closest thing to a Southern Vampire site I know of is the author's site, charlaineharris.com

I've pretty much enjoyed the Sookie series (though I seem to be in the minority). I'd read a cross fic, but really only if it centered in the Sookie universe or on Sookie characters.

Of course, Anita can annoy the ever living hell out of me, even in fanfiction on general principle, so, please keep that in mind. :)

Um, I said that it depended on something, except I'm going to be singularly unhelpful and say if it looks interesting. Actually, that's a lie. That's what I'd do if it was by anybody else, but, to be an ass-kisser (and also to tell the truth!), I'd read it because the quality of your writing is so good.

To sum up...If YOU write it, yeah I would read it.

I liked the Sookie Stackhouse novels but I started reading them at the same time as AB - the first four books which had plot. So I was judging them to that standard. I love the idea of Eric the Viking in the same room as JC. That would be sexy as hell.

But yeah, Sookie is less Sue-ish which is nice. At least of the ... um... three? four maybe? books I've read. I'm sure your take on it will be well worth the read, so have at it! :)

SGA is love.

We'll see what you say after you read the story (which I really want to finish soon). The thing I love about crossovers is they can introduce you to new worlds. I didn't actually start reading AB until after I read an interesting AB/BtVS crossover, back in the day. And I've never looked back.

I have to say I like the SV series better than AB. The characters are more believable and likable, and it doesn't ever feel like I'm skipping 5 chapters of sex just to find the plot.
If I ever saw a story involving SV, crossed or straight up, I'd probably read it out of curiousity if not interest. The trouble with any crossover is the worlds cannot really be overlapped. The SV vampires are, though still vampires, much tamer. There are more glaring differences, but I feel like the AB vamps can be way too dark. Liking Sookie, I would never want to wish that on her. I do think Anita going to their world would be interesting, though.

The canons are fundamentally irreconcilable, but I'm going to do my best. I think it's possible to make things work using that time-honoured tradition of crossover writers: Ignoring what doesn't fit.

I love the Sookie Stackhouse series, and would die a squeeing death if you wrote an AB/SV crossover. Oh, wow, would I.

I wonder if Sookie would be able to read Anita's mind...actually I start to think those two wouldn't get along. Sookie has too many morals and Anita's exactly the wrong type of college-degree-white-collar woman. Anita's whole 'I can do everything myself' also would clash with Sookie's home-girl down South thing. Of course that's just my take. ^^

Man this is intriguing. *waits with bated breath*

Die a squeeing death? *cracks knuckles* I better set to work then :P

Sookie and Anita approach their special gifts in utterly opposite ways. Sookie has lived a separate life and is just trying to "be", while being relatively happy. Anita is so angry at the world that it colours her way of acting and reacting.

I'm still not sure how Sookie's going to react to Anita. Or vice versa.

Well, by now from my earlier post you've all figured out I had a 'fuzzy brain' day the other day.

I really didn't conect Mhal's SV request for fic/fan site listings with her comment about the Southern Vampire series, which I will admit to never hearing about before hand.

I read in literally dozens of different fandoms & 9 out 10 'SV' = Smallville.

That said as an apology I tried to fic & fan links for the SoVamps but all I found was a 2004 interview w/the author & her official website.

Hey, no need to apologize. Now I know where to go if I ever need Smallville fics. It's always great to have that kind of a resource handy :)

I think 9.9 times out of 10 it's Smallville. the Southern Vampire series has a very tiny following, comparatively, and no fanfic to its name. Oh well.
