Ooh look, shiny cracked-meta! For my new crazy fandom Supernatural!

In In My Time Of Dying, John Winchester made a deal with the demon, Dean's life for the Colt and John Winchester himself. Then Daddy dies, and everyone's real sad, then the boys cremate the body and get all wrecked cry cry.

Yeah, okay, so John's dead. Right? Wrong (imo anyway). Come on. The demon just gets John dead? What kind of a deal is that? What better way to make life hell for the good guys (pun intended) than to turn the main man into the enemy? Like Emperor Palatine using Darth Vader to get to Luke? [/obligatory Star Wars reference]

And come on. We didn't see John die. We saw a body. Doesn’t even have to be his body. As far as we know, that body was never alive. He can reappear in corporeal form or just delicious ghostly form.

Yes, I'm clinging to the faintest of hopes because I'm a hopeless JW fangirl. But still, the idea that John will be used as some kind of complication in the boys' lives would be excellent in the hands of these writers, because of the amazing emotional impact.

PS I think Sam's secret is that he's like some kind of miracle baby, that the demons went after the kids because they're special in that good sort of way, and not that the demons wanted them for bad things and that's why John told Dean that Sam would be okay.

ETA: Ha! I am so totally vindicated by this April/06 interview with Jeffery Morgan on zapit: Quote from the article:

I'm sort of hoping that JW is over and done with, personally (and I really think he is). I hated him up to the point he died. I couldn't stand him until he made that sacrifice for Dean. Yeah, having him as an evil in a future ep would be a horrible mind!fuck for the boys, sure... I just hope it doesn't happen. They're both so not dealing with things as it is, anyway.

Jeffery Morgan is just so sexy, tho. I agree that his character was an obsessed bastard who I wanted to hit on several occasions.

Okay, that interview with JDM was *hilarious*. I was giggling, even. Him talking about how it was nicer to get to look at "Katie Heigl" than at Jensen and Jared... and how there's no way that age-wise he could be Jensen's dad...but *mentally*

I think John is dead, but I don't think he's gone. I read somewhere that Dean's comment about going into hell and killing every last demon if he had to might be a clue as far as that goes. So, we'll see I guess.

Yeah, they were very careful to leave out what the demon asked John for in exchange for Dean's life. If it was simply for his death, the PTB would have shown that explicitly.

And you've finished the first season already? Or have you been totally spoiled? Oh well.
