Robert Chase was a coward. More than that, he was a failure. He knew this deep in his bones, more than anything else.
When he was a child, he only ever wanted one thing in his life – to be a priest, to save souls, to do God's work. His dream survived his father's abandonment, his mother drinking herself to death, the harsh words of his peers. It survived the hard years in seminary school, working with those in need.
It survived right up until he found himself called upon to help with an exorcism. The young woman, hardly more than a girl, screamed obscenities, taunted the priests as they spoke the Latin of the exorcism, cast aspersions upon their faith and their deeds.
Then the thing inside the girl turned to Robert. For the first time in his life, he saw evil, pure evil.
The exorcism worked. The girl's soul was saved. She was strong.
Robert was not.
He wasn't strong enough to face evil, couldn't face up to a world where evil and demons ran rampant, untouched and unbothered by God's grace. He was afraid of what might be, of what he might be called upon to do. What sort of God could let such evil touch His children?
So he left, slunk home, did what he was told by his father and went to medical school. He might as well save lives.
He sure as hell wasn't any good at saving souls.

nice try at it =)
