he was such an amazing dancer who truly loved innovations and playing around with different forms of dance. Where Fred Astaire was a terrific dancer and loved playing with the traditional types of dance, Kelly enjoyed learning and playing around with all different types. Both were geniuses.

I have a bit of an obsession/love for old movies. If you ever get a chance, rent That's Entertainment (1974). It's basically a documentary put out by MGM that utilizes its stars (Astaire, Kelly, Sinatra, etc...) to introduce and highlight the big stars and their films from the heyday of MGM. MGM was the big musical studio. Not being fools, they had Kelly do the spiel for Astaire and Astaire do the spiel for Kelly. It is really interesting b/c it provides a lot of insight into the studio system (like how Judy Garland got her start) and with lots of clips, demonstrates the abilities of the MGM stars. Both Kelly and Astaire are terrific dancers and choreographers. MGM ended up putting out a number of followups to That's Entertainment, mostly because it was a surprise hit. It wasn't expected to do well in the box office, but ended up doing really well.

I have to admit, I haven't seen much Astaire over the years. My parents, who were dancers in the 70s (and isn't that an odd thing to say) were into the Gene Kelly stuff more and they were playing all the time in the house when I was twee. I should get more Astaire in my diet :)

If you haven't seen it already, see Royal Wedding, which has two of the most famous Astaire choreographed pieces: Sunday Jumps, where he dances with the hat rack and You're all the World to Me: where he dances on the ceiling.

I can't even stand up on roller skates, let alone think about dancing in them. Gene Kelly is truely made of win.

...but why was he wearing roller skates in the first place? I really need to watch more Gene Kelly movies, that man is absolutely amazing.

I think the context is that he just met a woman in a roller rink and he ducked out looking for her and found himself on the street in roller skates. I know that happens to me all the time.

But OMG Gene Kelly is King of Dance.

I adore Gene Kelly, and especially love this clip. Have you ever seen the one of him dancing with his reflection? Classic.

I found that clip last night. It's awesome. The imagination of that man (for I hear it was his idea) astounds.

Fo sho! There's nothing Gene Kelly can't do. I heard he once went back in time and showed the egyptians how to build pyramids. Then he took some elephants over the Alps and touched his nose with his elbow.

I do love that this is one of the rare dance numbers when those in the background are walking around and then suddenly they're like '...the hell?'

Really? I heard that Gene Kelly could divide by zero.

Frankly, if I was in the street and some dude started tap dancing on roller skates, I'd be all over that. Talk about skilz.

Just randomly: have you read Veritas, on TtH? Smallville/here crossover. Here meaning present day. It is excellent.

I think I saw that crossover on the TTH front page, but haven't gotten to it, as I'm not really into Smallville. Does one require canon knowledge, or just the idea that Clark Kent is Superman?

I'm not into Smallville either. I started thinking hard about the question and then realised hey, I've never watched Smallville or read much fic about it, and it wasn't bothering me. So short answer: no. Long answer: Clark seems to be very much Smallville!Clark as opposed to generic Clark Kent-y guy, but thus far, it's all set here, with no other Smallville characters/events making an appearance.

Watch Damsel in Distress. Apart from the fantastic dancing (I'm a Fred girl) the co stars are George Burns and Gracie Allen. She was FANTASTIC! I can see why George was the straight man.

Excellent, I'll put it on the to-watch list. I think I'll have a dance movie-fest one day this summer -- they don't make movies like this anymore.

That has to be the awesomeest thing I've seen today! Not that that's saying much. I just woke up an hour ago. But still. So far, soooo good.

I tihnk we may be living in a post apocolyptic world. If Gene is the second coming then I don't want to know. Hell if he were alive a tapping he could probably do that scene on inline roller blades. The man is Jesus.
