Help.

Specifically, flist, it's about the parents of Rodney McKay. What do we know about them from canon? Every time I wrack my brain, it's all most likely fandom related. I'm thinking mostly about his mother - do we know anything?

And yes, this does have 97% to do with Physics of the Spin...

Thank you!

In 'The Shrine' he says he remember her talking but can't understand what she's saying, so possibly French-Canadian.

In SG-1's 48 hours he says his parents fought all the time.

In 'McKay and Mrs Miller' Jeannie says her dad always wanted the two kids to work together.

*makes a note to re-watch the Shrine for the 9th time*

I remember the bit about his dad, from Mckay/Mrs... that was a fine episode.

From gateworld's transcripts:

"I keep seeing a face, every time I close my eyes. I think it's my mother. I don't -- I don't ... recognise her. So long ago. (He half smiles, his eyes full of tears.) She's saying words to me. (His smile fades.) I don't know them."

*g* It's a great ep

Oh - sorry. The thing about his parents fighting is from 'Redemption', not '48 hours'. I'm a bad fan *g*

I don't think we know anything about his parents. according to Stargate Wiki, his father read him moby dick at the age of 6 and since then, he's had recurring dreams of being eaten by a whale. Um... that's it.

I suspected as much, but was leery of making any ficcly claims as I haven't seen most of seasons 4 and 5. Rodney is such a fascinating character.

to be honest? I'm tired of him. The show has descended in season 5 into the "Rodney as the king of the geeks is the best person ever." Trufax. I'm a bit annoyed that Teyla and Ronon got shafted in season 5. The first episode of season 5 is awesome. Very teamy.

I think watching him in small batches helps. I've seen the first ep of season 5 (that was amazing - Sheppard in the Wraith dart with the baby? omg), then the Shrine, and the first five minutes of Vegas. I spend more time in the SGA fanfic, where I can chose which characters I want to interact with :)

*nods* I only have one episode left to watch on my DVR - Identity, but I think I'm going to skip as it has nothing to do except to "flesh out" Keller's character... b/c three episodes from the end, that's what we need. *sigh*

I keep up with SGA just so I know what's going on in fanfic. Shrine was nice - but again, for the team feel. I guess, what I wanted for season 5 - especially since it is the last season - was a series that focused on the team. Instead, we got Rodney is the best, rah, rah, rah. and oh yes! let us focus on these secondary characters like Woolsey and Keller.

That's an episode I don't want to watch either...

And as someone who has watched the whole thing to the end of season 5, my overall opinion of this season is... dude they soooo screwed up the characters, the team's dynamic, the storyline, everything really!! when they Mary_Sue'd Rodney.

and they didn't even Mary_Sue him properly. anybody remember 'Brain Storm'? *snort* it would have bn more in character to call everybody names, and go work on the problem alone.

They seem to be largely absent and angry. The wiki states they blamed him for their fights, which led the sibs to be close till Jeannie gave up science. He seemed to have more chemistry with his piano teacher (disappointing however it may be) than his mum.

all I can remember is he said they would fight a lot?
sounds like a bad divorce. Are they even alive? From what I can remember... Jeanie is his only living (close) relative.
I still remember the smirk on John's face when Rodney talked about an exceptionally hirsute aunt of his.. lol (early season 2 or 3, only remember they where in a jumper' and maybe ford was still there...

We actually learned some of his background in the SG1 episodes he first appeared in. The piano teacher story was in one of those.

Not that I can remember anything that hasn't been covered above. Except - I'm almost positive that there has been no definitive statement either way about either of them being dead - or alive. The past tense used in the discussion with Jeannie could mean ... anything, like, their dad is in a nursing home with dementia or something. Not that that's been stated (obviously), I just mean that canon has been left wide open for *sigh* future developments. (Though there are the planned movies in the future....)

And, oh boy, PotS!!!!! *bounces*

Mckay and Mrs. Miller is the only episode that really has any meaningful dialogue about their parents, all of the other episodes mentioned only talk in general terms about McKay's childhood (which he mostly remembers as being very awkward). In that one there was a kind of implication that Mckay's dad was also a scientist and wanted both of his children to follow in his footsteps, the elder Mckay was always refereed to in the past tense though. In The Shrine the gist of what McKay said about his mother was that he remembered her as being kind when he was young. I've always kind of assumed his parents were dead though because of the video letters home episode from season 1 (I can't think of the title), because when thinking of family, his sister was the only one he could think to leave a message to.
