I've had a busy day. Ficlette Fiasco IV, for
lita_of_jupiter: Dean Winchester from Supernatural, Physics of the Spin Rory, John and Rodney and if possible a little of SG1, with a really big cherry on top if dean is related to either John or Elizabeth like in one of your ficlets
Summary: John was pretty sure he didn’t want Captain Dean Winchester, USMC, in his city.
Rating: PG
Setting: In the future for Physics of the Spin, but in an AU sort of way. Spoilers for the beginning of SGA season four. None for SPN.
Words: ~1,400
Note: This sort of ran away with me, so it's less fluffy that I planned. Dean's 30, he can be a Captain in the Marines, right? This story is not only AU for SPN, it's also AU for Hey Little Sister - it disregards the last scene.
"You're mad."
John unclenched his jaw to answer Ronon without taking his eyes off the scene on the Gatrium floor. "I'm not mad."
"You look like you're going to choke that Marine if he gets any closer to Rory."
Had there been anyone else in earshot, John would have disputed the observation. But he and Ronon were on the bridge to Carter's office and there was no one else around and seriously, if Captain Dean Winchester took one more step towards Rory Gilmore, his first assignment on Atlantis was going to be cleaning alien barnacles off the south pier. With a toothbrush.
And it wasn't even the kid's fault. John couldn't blame him for flirting with Rory. No, John's dour mood had everything to do with Colonel Carter's insistence on bringing this particular Marine from the SGC to Atlantis.
Then Rory laughed at something Winchester said and John turned on his heel. It was high time he met his newest Marine.
Winchester shot to attention, still smiling at Rory, as John started down the steps. "Colonel Sheppard," Winchester said smartly.
"Captain Winchester," John returned, his stomach churning in an uneasy mix of jealousy and guilt. It wasn't this kid's fault, but all John wanted was for him to go back through the wormhole where he came from, and that had everything to do with John and not Winchester.
"I look forward to working under your command on Atlantis, sir!" Winchester returned. The underlying edge in his voice didn't have anything to do with how a suicidal Marine might flirt with his Co's girl.
John let out his breath. The conversation was beginning to attract the attention of everyone in the room, even McKay and Zelenka up in the control room. Control, John thought bitterly. I'm forty-two years old and this kid's making me almost lose it. He needed to deal with his shit now, in case he really did need to ship Winchester back through the Gate to Earth. "Captain, if you'll come with me to discuss your new posting."
Winchester moved immediately, but going in the indicated direction didn't stop the kid from giving Rory a flirtatious grin on his way out of the room.
Rory raised her eyebrows questioningly at John. He glared back. Her expression changed, to somewhere between don't you dare blame this on me and what is your damage?
John gave up and went after Winchester.
The Captain's confident I own the place stride faltered at the first split in the corridor. John brushed past the kid and led the way to his office. He closed the door, but Winchester stayed standing and John didn't feel like sitting for this particular conversation.
"Captain Dean Winchester," John said, recalling every word on the kid's service record like it was right in front of him. "You entered the Corps with a 3.5 GPA as soon as you graduated college. You've been with the SGC for two years. Your service record has been exemplary."
Winchester smiled, and John's heart almost stopped. In spite of what he'd seen on the pages of the report, he hadn't really believed that this kid could be related to--
"My dad was a Marine before I was born," Winchester said, riding roughshod over John's mental breakdown. "He died when I was a teenager and, well, I always knew I'd go into the family business."
And what about that year after he died, and you and your brother fell off the map? John wanted to ask, but held his tongue. Not yet. "You have a younger brother?" he asked instead.
For the first time, some real emotion showed in Winchester's eyes. Pride. "Sam. Went through Stanford and then NYU on a full ride. He got his law degree, but I don't hold that against him." The teasing, self-deprecating smile was real too, and John made a mental note to tread carefully around the subject of this Marine's brother.
Then the smile was gone and John found himself tensing for battle.
"Of course, we never would have gotten this far without my dad's cousin. After Dad died, she got us a guardian and kept pushing at us to do something with our lives." And now I'm here and she's not, was the subtext left heavy in the air.
John made a conscious effort to unlock his joints and relax. This wasn't a fight he would win. "I'm aware of who your cousin is," he said cautiously.
Winchester nodded. "Permission to speak freely, sir?"
John wanted to say no, to send this kid back to earth and never have to look at Elizabeth Weir's eyes in this unfamiliar face ever again. "Go ahead, Captain."
Winchester shifted his gaze to a spot above John's head, standing at something very close to attention. "I've been with the SGC for two years, and I have the security clearance to know what happened to Eli-- to Dr. Weir."
Over a year since it happened, and John still felt the icy guilt stabbing into his stomach at the memory of leaving Elizabeth behind in the Replicator city. "Then you'll know that we didn't have another option."
"I know, sir." Winchester swallowed. "I just..." He looked at John. "I understand what happened, sir. I've been there. Where you were."
John knew the Captain wasn't lying, not with that lurking pain in those green eyes. But he'd read through Winchester's record, top to bottom, and he knew that nothing like that had ever happened during the Captain's military career.
John gave a sharp nod, and Winchester relaxed just a little. Again, John wondered exactly what happened when Winchester was fifteen, when the newly orphaned brothers fell off the grid for one long year before Elizabeth found them in Ilchester, Maryland, dusted them off, and set them on the right path.
"Your cousin saved the lives of everyone on this city countless times," John said. "She was an amazing woman." And I'm sorry I let her die, he thought, words he would never be able to say to anyone.
Winchester hesitated, then stood even straighter. John's heart sank. Dear god, now what?
"Sir, I want to assure you that my presence in Atlantis is entirely due to merit, and nothing to do with my family connections," Winchester said in a rush. "While Dr. Weir did suggest my name to the SGC as a potential candidate, I was selected solely on my record, and my assignment to Atlantis is due to my achievements at the SGC."
John blinked. Was Winchester worried that John thought the assignment was due to nepotism? What kind of outfit did he think John ran?
"Elizabeth would never suggest someone for anything unless they were the best man for the job," John said. "If anything, your family connections would only be a stumbling block at the SGC. You'd need to jump higher to prove you could do this. Besides," John added when the kid looked at him skeptically. "I saw the files Colonel Carter was given to select new Marines for this assignment. I can guarantee this has nothing to do with Elizabeth."
Winchester pursed his lips, clearly not entirely convinced, but it would do for now.
"I want you to report to Major Lorne for assignment of your quarters and an introductory itinerary," John continued. "I'll take you to his office, and then you're on your own."
"Yes sir!" Winchester all but saluted. Jesus, the Captain's enthusiasm level was tiring. Had John ever been that young? Probably, but it was a distant memory. John headed out the door and down the corridor toward Lorne's office, Winchester all crisp attention at his side. "So, Dr. Gilmore," Winchester said out of the blue. "I met her at the SGC before she got tapped. She's one smart lady, isn't she?"
Lady. Ha. She had to be at least four years younger than this Captain, and didn't that make John feel like a dirty old man. "Yes, she is," John said.
"She seeing anyone?" Winchester asked with a friendly grin, probably his first attempt at camaraderie with his new CO.
The sudden surge of jealousy in John's chest had nothing to do with Elizabeth. "Yes. Me."
Winchester's eyes went wide. John could almost hear him thinking, oh shit. "A woman of fine taste," he stammered. Then he went pale. "Not that I'm hitting on you. Sir."
John sighed. If only Elizabeth could see them now.

Are we ever going to see a Hey Little Sister fic with adult Elizabeth around? :) Not that I don't love how her ghost seems to haunt John in everything you write.
