"Eat it."
Cam tried to bat Vala's hand away from his face, but the pie-wielding fist of destiny was not to be ignored. "Vala, I swear to God--"
"Which god?" she asked, slipping sideways and depositing herself on the crowded bench in the empty space beside Cam. He counted himself rather lucky she didn't sit in his lap. "Just a taste."
Trying to ignore the stares of thevillagers people of Stars Hollow, Cam shifted around so Vala's hand wasn't on his thigh. They'd had the personal space discussion about ten times, not that it ever mattered. Cam was pretty sure that Vala understood; she just didn't care. And usually, neither did he (because it was Vala and that alone explained everything) but really, there were people.
And then Rory Gilmore bounced over to the sound of the music and tripped her way onto the bench. Well, partly onto the bench. Mostly into Vala's lap.
That, Cam was convinced, settled it. The universe hated him, because if he was supposed to sit here and keep his thoughts G-rated while Vala sat around cavorting with Rory (who was Someone Else's Girl)... He sat up straight and held out his hand. "Fine, Vala, I'll try the pie."
Vala, who had been whispering in Rory's ear, gave him a double-take. "What pie?" she asked innocently.
Rory slid off Vala's lap to the bench, her skirt riding up her thighs. Cam tried to not look, he really did, but his gaze slipped downwards for a moment. When he had wretched his eyes back center, the calculating expression on Vala's face chilled him to the bone.
"Do you get a slice of Sookie's pie?" Rory asked, leaning against Vala. "It's the best in the world, especially at the Stars Hollow Apple Festival."
Vala cut into the crust with a fork, then held it out to Cam. "Come on," she coaxed. "Eat me."
Across the table, Rory's friend Lane nearly choked on her coffee.
Cam took the fork from Vala. It was just pie. Cam still knew that his mother made the best pie in the country, but it never hurt to try new things, especially if Rory recommended it. He'd survived nearly twenty years eating Air Force food and he wasn’t dead yet.
He put the fork in his mouth and bit down.
"That's pretty good," he said in surprise. The apples were juicy, the spices subtle and the crust crispy. "Let me have another bite."
Vala pulled the plate towards her chest, cradling it like a child. "Get your own!"
"Can't," Rory said, blithe as she stole a piece of the crust from Vala's pie. "They're out."
Cam Mitchell was a Colonel in the Air Force. He wasn't going to beg a team member.
He could, however, order her around. "Vala, give me the pie."
She stuck her tongue out at him and turned her back, propping her knees over Rory's legs.
Cam sighed as the sounds of the Apple Festival rose up in the night. He was still half on edge (because how often had he been off-world at some kind of festival where everyone wanted to kill him and his team?), but things were all right. Vala leaned back against his arm, reassuring as much as she was frustrating. Rory smiled at him occasionally, the townsfolk engaged in conversations around them, and things were pretty much okay. It didn't suck that Rory and Vala had roped him into coming to Connecticut for a few days.
But damn it, he wanted more pie.

Date: 2010-01-07 02:01 am (UTC)Love how Cam can't even say to himself whose "girl" Rory is. Or was that trying to be tricky and conceal what happens in the main story since this is a future fic?
Once again, Vala is awesome.
Thanks for sharing.

Date: 2010-01-07 02:16 am (UTC)villagerspeople of Stars Hollow..."*snorflegiggle* I think Cam had it right the first time! I can only imagine Taylor's reaction to that and I'm quite certain poor Lorelai will get an ear full.
Thank you for sharing this snippet, I really do enjoy this 'verse.
Pardon the edit, I had to fix the code that didn't copy over.
