~~*~~
Dawn sat back in her kitchen table chair at the Burrow and stared at Harry Potter. She didn't frown or scowl at him, although the amount of effort that took wasn't exactly making her happy.
One of the Weasley twins darted through the kitchen, Ginny hot on his heels, but even that didn't distract Dawn or Harry from their mutual glower.
Just because he doesn't like me dating Remus, Dawn thought, the edges of her mouth curving downward. This had been going on for over a year now, and it was wearing at Dawn's nerves.
Ginny ran back through the kitchen, this time chased by a twin. Hermione came after them, pulling up short when she saw Dawn and Harry.
"I've had it!" the witch exclaimed. She put her hands on her hips and glared at both Harry and Dawn. "When are you two going to stop this?"
"Stop what?" Harry demanded, sitting up straighter.
"Stop this stupid spat!" Hermione retorted. "She didn't cast a magic spell on Remus, Harry. He just likes her and she likes him, so get over it!" Hermione turned to Dawn. "And Harry's not going to interfere with you, Remus is his family, too."
That said, Hermione took an awkward step back, then hurried from the room.
Dawn's cheeks burned. That so wasn't why she didn't like Harry.
Was it?
Harry quickly stood up. "That's not-- I'm not--" He gave up and stalked after Hermione.
Dawn sat still for several minutes. In the house around her, she heard much noise and merriment, as the Weasleys and their extended adopted family celebrated the holiday season. After a while, Dawn got to her feet, slipped on her jacket, and walked out to the garden.
Remus sat on a low stone wall, looking up at the thin sliver of the moon. He turned his head as she approached, a smile on his face.
Dawn smiled back, still feeling a thrill in her chest when she saw him. Did he feel the same way about her? She thought so. But was her irritation at Harry affecting Remus?
As she sat beside Remus on the wall, she grudgingly had to admit that she wasn't completely blameless in all this whole situation.
"What are you thinking?" Remus muttered as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder. "You're frowning."
Dawn snuggled into his embrace. "Just thinking about some stuff," she said. "So, um..."
"Yes?" Remus prompted.
Dawn took a deep breath. "Do you think Harry and Ginny might like to come over for dinner on Boxing day?" she asked.
Remus pulled back, looking mildly astonished. "Are you certain?"
Making herself nod, Dawn said, "I'm sure."
After a heartbeat, Remus smiled, a slow and soft smile that had a lot of feeling behind it. He didn't say anything, but he didn't have to. She knew it was her that had kept that smile off his face, and it made her feel like a heel.
She'd do anything for Remus, Dawn thought as he gathered her back into his arms. Anything to keep that happy smile on his face.
Even if it meant she had to be nice to Harry Potter.

Date: 2006-01-11 08:14 pm (UTC)I can tell you what Snape would name a puppy. He'd call it Fidelis (http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=136&chapno=1) and be very gloopy towards it, especially as it saved his life. :-)
