This is the first of two meta pieces of the afternoon. This is on books. The next is on TV and will be up later tonight.

I'm listening to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as an audiobook, which is helpful because when I'm re-reading I usually skip a lot because I know how it goes. Anyway, my point is that I had forgotten what an awesome story this is. JKR does a great job in world-building, not only for a book, but for a children's book. It reminds me why I fell in love with this world.

And let's talk about another set of books.

I'm not sure if any of you out there read the "Cat Who..." series of mysteries (by Lillian Jackson Braun), but there's like 20+ books in the series. Backstory and an escape from the rut: yr doin it rite )

Also, a line I wrote today:

A security guard, the proper kind with a gun keeping a steely eye on the doorway...

Oh punctuation, how we miss you when you're gone.

Finally.

The final Harry Potter title has been announced.

SF Gate story on the title, or you can go to JK Rowling's website and play a game to find it (cheat hints on the game in the SFG article)

How to give a Harry Potter fan a heart attack:

1. Try to enter "http://www.hp-lexicon.org/" in your browser
2. See "This domain name expired on 04/24/2006 and is pending renewal or deletion."
3. Panic.

How will I find out who has the Mauraders' Map now? Do I have read those books again? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Anyone know why PDS and the Lexicon and everything else on the Internet is breaking all at the same time?

ETA: NEVER MIND it's working now there was problems etc etc and I happened to try and see it during a problem time. OH WELL now I don't have to read those books again.
ETA2: NO IT'S NOT WORKING FOR ME oh well.

First off: Tonks love! [livejournal.com profile] theregoesyamum has a great character profile up on Tonks: The Deconstruction of a Miss Nymphadora Tonks. In which Gun goes into the character, how Tonks is smart and blunt and fallible and real, and then the writer backs her shit up with evidence. Good times.

Second: You know, if you don't like what I'm doing in my stories, tell me. But give me evidence and specifics, not just "yeah, this licked, you hack." I'm willing to take criticism as much as anyone, but give me a hand and make it constructive, KTHNX.

PS No one actually said that my writing licks, or called me a hack. I'm paraphrasing.

I think I've been spoiled a little, coming from a fandom like Anita Blake, where there doesn't seem to be any canon paring that people rabidly and loudly avoid. I'm not one chapter into the Hogwarts section of Inevitable, and someone has already told me they're done with the story because they don't like Harry/Ginny. (Who is unimportant, and this is not an attack. I suspect several of the non-commenting readers may have the same reaction. I'd like you to stick around, obviously.)

I was wondering if anyone would do this, and I have to say that I'm not shocked, given the nature of the Harry Potter fandom, but it's still a bit of a surprise.

Here's my opinion: It doesn't matter if this story will have aspects of Harry/Ginny. It doesn't matter if this story has aspects of Ron/Hermione, either, because that's not the point. This is a story about Harry and his friends, his enemies, his goals and aspirations. Ultimately, it's entirely about him.

We're 46 chapters in. Harry had one late-night conversation with a girl he's known since he was 12, and who has battled Voldemort since she was 11 years old. I will still continue to tell the story I created before HBP came out.

This isn't an angry, off-the-cuff rant, it's just my thoughts on my story, and HP fandom in general. I was wondering if this would happen after the die-Ginny-die calls started after HBP.

That's all I have to say.

My monthly HP rambles. (Contains HBP discussion, FYI)

Yes, kids! It's time for Yet Another Horcrux Theory (YAHT).

Now, we've all heard them. Harry's a horcrux. His scar is a horcrux. His eyes (the colour of Aveda Kedavra... a coincidence? I think NOT!) are the horcrux.

Well, here's my crazy theory: Voldemort's wand is the horcrux.

See, it all makes sense. That Halloween night at Godric's Hollow, with both Lily's and James's deaths swirling around, Voldie goes in for the final kill (baby!Harry). He raises his wand, magic at the ready... but the magic is pushed back and Voldemort destroyed.

The wand was the only thing between Voldemort and Harry.

So far, JKR hasn't made any indication if a horcrux can be anything other than an inanimate object, but what we've seen (the diary, Gaunt's ring) would make it seem as though the thing must be inanimate. Indeed, Dumbledore theorized that Voldemort was questing to use Hogwarts founder objects, not Hogwarts' students. (That might have been to spare poor Harry the angst, however).

We've seen only inanimate objects as horcruxes (the diary, Gaunt's ring) and it would make sense to think that the thing must be inanimate. (It being risky to turn a living object into a horcrux, as per Dumbledore). So, yeah.

What do you think?
